Excel 2010 poor performance

I have just 'upgraded' from excel 2003.

I find that copy/paste of charts and resizing/redrawing of charts to be very slow (2-5 secs) in excel 2010. In excel 2003 these operations appeared to be instantaneous.

Is this normal? Is there a way to speed this up?

System: i5 750, 4gb ddr3, hd5850

If this is the standard level of performance, why would anyone use this product over openoffice?

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I suspect it might be the add-ins that is causing the problems.

Open Excel | Go to File | Options | Add-ins |

  1. In the Add-ins box, identify the add-in that you want to enable or disable and note the Add-in type located in the Type column.
  2. Select the Add-in type in the Manage box and then click Go.
  3. Select or clear the check box for the Add-in that you want enable or disable and then click OK.
  4. I would recommend to disable all non Microsoft add-ins
If you find difficulty doing that use this utility to disable them OfficeIns: Office Addin Manager (Enable/Disable Outlook/Word/Excel Add-Ins)

Good Luck,
Captain

Thx Cpt Jack. I'll give it a try. But this is on a clean install of Office 2010 - are 3rd party plugins standard with such an install?

Yup i understand. But there are lot of software that put add-ins to Office. For example i-tunes, Adobe PDF Reader etc.

Slow start up if solver is installed

Hello,

If add-ins are installed, start up of Excel 2010 take about 5 seconds instead of less than one. This is the case with solver for example. I haven't this problem with Excel 2007.

thx jibse - i do have the solver installed. Toal weak sauce that it adds so much to the loading time. I guess I'll have to install it as required.

Also, on another forum I received the advice that I may have selected the column header instead of just the filled cells while making my chart - in fact this is true. Excel 2003 only used 65000 rows, so this 'weren't no thang' but now 2010 uses many more - so I'll also try to just select my data range instead of the entire column and see if this helps during copy/paste and redraw operations. This seems likely to me, but will report back once I test it out.

Thanks Raves,

I choose also to instal it as required. But I have also this problem with personnal xlam addin and I have now to replace this xlam by a personnal file, but I will lose my personnal buttons (create with Excel 2003). Too bad.

turns out my issue was selecting the entire column as my data series. once i just selected the filled cells, load time when to 'instant' as did copy/paste and chart resize operations - thanks all.
