Excel 2010 Sparklines: Fitting the Big Picture Into One Cell.

Sam Radakovitz talks about sparklines, the new feature he developed for Microsoft Office Excel 2010 that helps people display large quantities of information in a bite-sized way.

To the soft-spoken Excel program manager, it’s still mind boggling even a decade later. “I don’t even know if I’ve fully grasped it yet, the number of people using Excel day in and day out,” Radakovitz says.

Radakovitz recently developed a new feature for Microsoft Office Excel 2010 called “sparklines,” which he describes as intense, simple, word-sized graphics. Sparklines let users take large sets of data and present them visually in small spaces, for instance showing 20 years of stock price data in one small graphic that will fit inline in a report, or even within a paragraph.

“It’s the big picture in one, single space,” Radakovitz says.

Hi there
MS EXCEL was one of the FIRST programs I ever used on a computer -- actually I'll have to be honest -- I was weaned on the DOS version with some spreadsheet that came installed with the computer but switched to EXCEL in the original public release.

I've been using it ever since and apart from a slight niggle over the ribbon in 2007/2010 (version 2003 ribbon was my favourite) EXCEL IMO just gets better and better -- especially with Data capture from the web for intsance and ease of integration with the ACCESS DATABASE. It's a pity however that ACCESS hasn't made nearly the same progress.

Even if Windows had never existed EXCEL for me would have been probably the most useful program I've ever used (and am continuing to use) on a computer.

I once did a contract at a site where IBM were the main contractor -- I never got round again to using the last version of LOTUS 1-2-3 -- IBM had just taken it over so their staff had to use it instead of EXCEL -- after years of EXCEL Lotus (or the IBM product) was a DINOSAUR.

I cheated by doing my work on EXCEL on my own laptop and then "Importing" it into Lotus -- and even then half the decent macros didn't have the functionality or web data capture that EXCEL had.

I believe even these days on a lot of sites where IBM is the main consulting supplier EXCEL is now used -- which says a lot for the MS product.

I believe IBM still uses that dreadful Dinosaur of a product Lotus Notes too -- that one should also have been retired donkey's years ago too.

In the Office stakes MS still wins clear. -- Open Office is a passable alternative and if I couldn't use Office for any reason I coould probably get by with it -- but it still isn't anywhere nearly as good as MS Office.
