Solved Excessive Log Files(.cab) - Problem comes back with CCleaner or manual

Hello,

I hope this is the correct forum section.

So I have Windows 7 Professional x64 installed, all updates installed (including the ones that pester the user to upgrade to Windows 10. I have no intention of doing that though).

Frequently, my Windows Log files take up to 16 GBytes (current value) of space, which is rather annoying. If I run CCleaner or delete the files manually, they trigger two things:

1 - The next times I shut down Windows, the screen hangs with the message "Configuring Windows, please do not power off your computer" ad eternum. I believe that when this happens, it may internally be in a continuous loop polluting my log file.
2 - The log file shows up again, consuming obscene amounts of space (around 15 GBytes).

This attached image windows_fail.PNG shows the problem.

Is this a known issue? What steps may I take to permanently correct this?

EDIT: I removed some of the Microsoft spyware, mainly through this resource: https://github.com/WindowsLies/BlockWindows. This problem was already happening before I ran this software.

Thanks for your time,

My best regards,

- Kidon

Welcome to the forum,

I don't have an answer for the size, I'm curious why they are all text documents, that would be the uncompressed file.

Here's what mine look like,

You are not showing any .cab files.

Thanks for the answer.

Yes, I meant CBS and not .cab, my mistake.
It seems not only they are not being compressed, they are most probably storing worthless information.

Do you recommend any tool to scan these files to find out what is all the trash?

Apologies for the re-post but is there really no one with this issue?
Windows just insists on hogging around 10 GB of CBS log files and I would really like to know how to fix this problem...

Thinking out loud -

You stated that you have installed all Windows updates including those that promote/pester (and PRE LOAD) Windows 10 upgrade to your system...I wonder if those large files are related to Win10 pre load "just in case" you want Win10 now.

Regards,
GEWB

Well, I actually uninstalled quite a few of those updates and Microsoft spyware, mainly through this resource: https://github.com/WindowsLies/BlockWindows. Note: this was already happening before I ran BlockWindows.

Can you recommend any tool which is able to scan the log files and determine if there is some sort of faulty event being looped by the operating system? That could explain this behavior.

Thanks GEWB!

It all depends what CBS you have and where they are located.
If you run sfc /scannow often you will get a lot of CBS persist logs.
They really don't hurt anything but when I get in the mood I clear out CBS persist logs.

Those log sizes are way out, my 1 (text) log is only 31Kb, in your case i strongly suggest you run your malware/virus AV progs.
They also all have the same date, incorrect there produced every time you update.
As there showing 2015 im also wondering if its been updated since then?? or is it a partial log

@Layback Bear: I will try that. They hurt when they are obviously taking way more space than they should (15 GB for example).

@torchwood: I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and I don't browse shady websites on that computer. I use NoScript and AdBlock on Mozilla and flash is disabled most of the time... Yes, that image is from 2015, but I'll get a recent one if you think it may help.

Isn't there a way to scan it to understand if it is the system trying to do something, failing and retrying? That could generate all the spam I figure.

@torchwood: thanks for the suggestion, but I have actually stopped updating Windows 7 ever since Microsoft added unwanted and unannounced features such as harassing me to upgrade to Windows 10 and what seems to be telemetry spyware.

And this started happening long before these updates came into existence. I have the system set to not check for updates. You can find attached to this post a file listing my current updates on this system.

Using the Windows PowerShell utility, I could see that none of the bloatware for Windows 10 was installed.
I executed sfc /scannow previously and it did not find anything.

Now, about this SURT tool you mentioned: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Is it safe to install considering that I wish to not update the system further?

It is a 550 MB file: Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu. What does it do exactly? (I mean under the hoods as well)

Thanks for the help so far!

@torchwood: it seems that system checker worked.
TrustedInstaller (and svchost) are no longer eating 25%+ CPU and the CBS disk usage stabilized: it now holds small .cab files as it is supposed.
