.exe association mystery

Hey all,
I have read countlesss posts in the last two days about this issue. They all touch on the issue that I am having but no one seems to have the exact problem that I do.

When I try and run an .exe file it tells me "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." The only problem is that it is a brand new install of windows, with a full format and chkdsk with repair performed.

The fix that refers to using the "Merge" option I get the same message by the way.
I get "Access denied" in DOS mode.
But it allows me to start "Notepad" and "Explorer" no problem.

Please help me if you can, I have been down for over a week now and I really need to finish some work for some clients.

Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt

Right click and "Run as Administrator".

Choose an .exe file and run it;



Does it run OK?

Oh ya,
I cannot run cmd.exe either.
Even when I follow the steps above.
The only way I can get to DOS shell is to 'Ctrl -Shift- Esc' and then "Ctrl - click - New Task"

Here's being optomistic!!!!!

OK go to the command shell ( "DOS Box")and try to run an .exe file.

Does it run?

No it gives me the same error as before, but also displays Access is denied in the shell.

I appreciate the help by the way.... I have been racking my brains over this for so long now I have almost given up......

I just tried to run systeminfo.exe and it ran. I dont know if that helps at all....

Well it looks as if you have some sort of weird rights issue.

Only solution I can think of is to reinstall. There is no way to do anything at all without access.

Systeminfo wont do you any good as you can't get access to anything useful from it.

I was afraid you were going to say that... This will be the third install in five days.... it's killing me. The first two times I got the system repair screen for now apparent reason. This time I decided to check things out before shutting down and found this issue when I finally decided to reinstall my Adobe Suite.

Is there a back door to change the admin settings from the Shell?

There are no backdoors if you can't get anything to run!

If this happens with recurring installs then you have some other underlying problem, possibly with the boot disc.

Is it possible for you to swap out some hardware?

If so I would swap out the boot disc.

Thanks Mike, I will try and reinstall for the last time and then I go and get a new hard drive.
Windows 7 already told me 2 bad drives so I removed them.... I don't understand all the problems, XP seemed sooooo much simpler.
I will let you know how I make out.

Are you re-using older drives?

Yes, 7 is a little harder to set up, but it's really great when you get it going.

Solved (for now)

It seems that the re-install worked.....
Keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't bug out on me....

Make a backup immediately.

Just in case you do have some sort of drive damage or other impending failure.
