Explorer error - Could not find this item.

When moving or renaming a folder or zip file only in windows 7 I get this message:

"Could not find this item.
This is no longer located in [path]. Verify the item's location and try again."

I can click Try Again or Cancel.

Click Try Again and the folder moves as is should.

I see this error posted all over the net. The problem always occurs when someone deletes a folder or any file for that matter.

That's not my problem.

I get this message only when I move or rename any folder or zip file any where on any drive. No other file types are affected by this. Copying folders or zip files does not create this message.

I have been using Windows Double Explorer from time to time and I get the messages using that as well, but not with Directory Opus.

In the screen shots I have provided, all I did was drag and drop Example folder to Example1 folder and the same for New WinZip File.zip to Example1 folder.
I have not been able to find a solution anywhere for this. I figure that is has something to do with file associations or something along those lines but I just can't be certain.


Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Can we assume you dont have a backup from before the problem started? DO you have a win 7 dvd to do a repair install?

Hello Ken, yes I do have my disc but I don't think I have a back up. I'm still using the first install of win7. If there is no fix I will just reinstall. I bought a retail copy this time (instead of OEM with my XP) so I would be able to upgrade and/or install as many times as I like.
I'm still very frustrated with how win7 behaves (no "Remember each folders view settings" is just the most pathetic omission there could ever be ) with some software and games ie Crysis and FarCry2 simply will not run on my machine. Half Life 2 and other Valve games will not display textures properly as well and there are other games which either do not run or won't run properly. So I will work as many kinks out as I can before I reinstall.
If there is no fix for this problem I will deal with it until its time to reinstall. Having to use 3rd party software to do things that XP did perfectly is just a shame and a joke. I can't believe I fell for the hype. When I found out that win7 SP1 was not going to include the "Remember each folders view settings" I was not happy. I can't believe MS could not fix the code for "Remember each folders view settings" because of the useless snap feature. Sorry had to vent there.

Also, I will be using an Advanced Format drive soon (WD15EARS) as my system drive but I will have to wait to use it because no imaging software will write to the proper sectors yet.

Thanks for your time. I will be checking the thread to see if anyone does have a fix or needs more info to diagnose.

I will give win7 64bit credit for two things though, it has not crashed (ever) and with all the software I've installed and uninstalled its has not slowed down one bit! I have not been maintaining this installation at all, save Puran Defrag, I'm just letting it go because I will reinstall later anyway.

Well two days ago I reinstalled, and even used the new Advanced Format (WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1) drive I bought. So brand new HDD. Everything was OK until last night when the microsoft forced the install of KB2286198. You can also read about it here on this web site:

Now I know that this is the cause of this stupid dialog window because as soon as I noticed it I preformed a system restore and what do you know, it was gone. After I restarted the update was obviously forced upon my machine again an the problem came back.

So I ask again how does one fix this problem?

I have not found any type of fix for this.
Remember, this dialog pops up when I create, move or copy a new folder or zip file ONLY. Any other file types are not affected. Also, the dialog pops up only after I rename the New Folder or New WinZip File.zip. I can create a hundred of these without the pop up as long as I don't rename them!

As you can see from the screen shot, the folder is still highlighted. The pop up is referring to something that does not yet exist.

I could do another system restore but windows update downloads KB2286198 and has it ready for a shutdown even before my machine is finished completely booting.

Thanks in advance. I'm off to scour the net for a fix that probably doesn't exist.

OK I found a fix. I was finding all these problems online as I said "I see this error posted all over the net. The problem always occurs when someone deletes a folder or any file for that matter" but I guess the fix for folder renaming is one and the same. ktxbye.

Almost a year later, and still having the same problem

I found this thread while researching the same problem. I know this thread is dead, but an answer was posted that I hope helps. If this problem is as prevelent ans posted, I'm supprised its still around. Thank heaven for places like this where answers to problems like this, that are still around.

In my opinion updates causing more problems then they solves.
I dont understand why updates not include fixes provided on this forum in form of a registry file.

Same for UBUNTU. Every time i run an update, computer wont work no more. Or if it will, it will act strange.

Did anyone else that had this problem disable Libraries? That registry fix fixed it for me. My problem happened when creating a "New Folder" and renaming it (never tried with zip files).

The strange thing was that this is a pretty new install on my work computer and I've been using 7 at home on two different computers since the beta first came out and never had this problem until now.

So I diffed the registry fix with my branch of HKLM/Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions and the only things different were that the entries pertaining to Libraries were gone. This is because I had run a script recently that disabled Libraries (by removing their registry entries).

So now I'm thinking it might be a combination of having Libraries disabled and the KB2286198 hotfix together that caused it.

This fix worked for me too....and I also disabled libraries but I can't rememeber if it was happening before that though I don't think it was. I do remember that it didn't happen on 32 bit when it was installed but I used a different process to hide the libraries when that was installed.

Solved, favorites, regedit

Sorry for the late reaction. I did have the same problem. Windows 7 and 64. No fix did work for me. After renaming a file, the file name was changed to the original name. Error message when opening as mentioned in this post. I discovered this problem was only related to one directory and all sub-dirs. The folder was also in my favorites. To be honest yesterday I did restore the default location. I restored an old backup of the registry, I believe this one was before the change of the default location. After that I removed the entry from Favorites and checked. The problem was gone.

Here it is, Sep 22, 2013 and this error just started happening to me recently. I applied the suggested fix and it worked for me. I cannot believe Microsoft has not fixed this yet! What are the paying attention to? Must be other, more significant issues.
