For the past week or so, my explorer.exe has been crashing and restarting. Today it went haywire, crashing as soon as I restarted it with Task Manager. Another issue I've been having is that Firefox won't open. I have to open a file with Firefox for the browser to open. I ran hijackthis, and this is what it spat out:

You might want to uninstall what you put on, then if you really need what you had on install one by one see if you can find the problem as it maybe something you installed.

Download and install shellexview from HERE.

After installing go to View/Choose Columns. You want to have all of the Context Menu items together because you're going to start to disable them until you find the one that's causing the problem. In my case it was the NVidia menus that were causing my crashes.

Well I didn't follow the link posted above which gives the same advice. Pardon my repeating.

I just ran sfc /scannow, and it said it found things. I rebooted my computer and ran the scan again. This time it didn't find anything. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is still blocking IP addresses, 67.215.246.203, 193.107.16.156, and 222.186.12.42 are the main ones. I update it before every scan.

Ok, since my last post, the web address 222.186.12.42 has tried to open itself every two minutes. Malwarebytes is blocking it, but it's trying even when I have firefox closed. This isn't just some popup.

Explorer is not crashing anymore. Malwarebytes' kept saying it was blocking websites from opening, I didn't even have Firefox open half the times it was happening, and it would happen every two or three minutes. It might be me registering my copy of Anti-Malware, which has real-time protection. Would it help if I gave a copy of the logs?

Hi, Bubbayoshi. Capt.Jack asked me to take a look at your thread.

While it is fresh in my mind, please note that your Adobe software is out of date. There have been a number of security updates to both Adobe Reader and Adobe Air due to critical vulnerabilities. You can get the updates at Adobe.

As to the IP Addresses mentioned, from what I have seen elsewhere, it could likely be from a P2P program. Do you have any P2P program like limewire, bitrorrent, etc. installed?

What does this notification mean?

This notification means quite simply, that an IP address has been blocked. It does NOT necessarily mean you are infected, it simply means a program on your computer (e.g. your browser, IM program, P2P program etc), tried accessing a malicious IP address. If this notice was presented when you were not actually doing anything on the machine, then I suggest having your computer looked at.
Thus, even with Firefox closed, if another program was attempting to access those IP Addresses, MBAM would block them.

Let's see if GooredFix finds anything:

  • Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
    Alternative Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed before continuing.
  • Double-click Goored.exe to run it. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, please right-click and select run as administartor
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply. It can also be found on your desktop, entitled GooredFix.txt.

Hi, Bubbayoshi.

Is Firefox working now? Please let me know in you next reply, along with providing a fresh MBAM scan. Kindly do the following:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click the Update tab and "Check for Updates
  • Once the update has been installed and the program has loaded, select Quick scan
[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
[*]Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
    MBAM_SR.png

    [*] Click Remove Selected.
[*]When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
[*]The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
[*]Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

It's still not coming up 100% of the time, though it is starting a new process for each click. The scan didn't find anything. Here's the result log anyway:

Let's flush your DNS cache and restore the HOSTS file:

Please copy/paste the lines in bold below to Notepad:

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.
Double-click flush.bat file to run it. Your computer will reboot.

Note: For Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click flush.bat and select "Run as Administrator".
