Explorer is showing incorrect disk usage

Hi Everyone,

I am using Windows 7 (x64) and I am getting incorrect disk usage reporting through Explorer. I am looking at a 1TB disk, which with partitioning considered is showing as a 931GB disk - however even though I am using only 421GB of the disk space Windows 7 (Explorer) is showing that there is only 202GB free on the disk!

As you can see above I selected all of the files on the disk, right clicked, selected Properties, and the results of my enquiry are shown (superimposed over the Explorer view).

If anybody has any suggestions on how to correct this issue they will be greatly appreciated.

P.S.: I have also shown "hidden Operating System Files" and there was no significant difference!

Out of curiosity, what does is show when you do dir in a command prompt?

Selecting all files and looking at the properties of those files is the WRONG way. IT IS ALWAYS WRONG. Now in "My Computer" screen, right-click on a drive and viewing its properties is always CORRECT. An no, there is no way to correct properties on files because Explorer does not actually see EVERYTHING thus cannot be counted.

I didn't realize the OP selected files. What you say is correct. If you right click a folder and select properties to get a file count, the count always excludes hidden and system files. At least when I did an MD5 summer utility I had to exclude hidden and system files from recursive gathering to have the count match Explorer's tally.

In addition, a "1TB" drive will show up as only 931GB to begin with - not a Windows issue, but because that 1TB is really 1,000,000,000,000 bytes = 976,562,500 KB = ~953,674 MB = ~931 GB.
