Explorer Issues

I just picked up a older dell with Windows 7 installed. In the process of getting things setup the way I like them I ran into an issue with explorer. I can't get it to stay in a dual pane view with the folder tree on the left.

At first I just pinned explorer to the taskbar and all it would do is open to the "libraries" view, no folder tree. Then I created a shortcut and added /e to the target line and all seemed well. However when I do this two things happen. I have the original explorer icon on the taskbar, as well as a new one for the open window and as soon as I click on a folder in the folder tree the folder opens and the folder tree goes away.

Anyone out there got advice for a Windows 7 noob? I've spent close to two hours searching for an answer to this but haven't turned up anything. Thanks for reading!

Hello Wingnut, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check to make sure that the Navigation Pane is turned on. It is a universal setting in all windows.

You can also change what the default pinned Windows Explorer icon on the taskbar opens to by default instead of Libraries. The tutorial below can help show you how to set it to what you like instead.

Ok that got rid of the 2nd icon in the taskbar, but as soon as I click on something(anything) the file tree disappears and it goes back to the one plane view. I also just noticed that the "apply to folders" icon in folder options is grayed out.

Folder Options will need to be opened from within that same window instead of say the Control Panel for "apply to folders' to not be grayed out.

If turning the Navigation Pane on normally in the post above does not help, then you might see if resetting all folder views in Windows 7 back to default may help.
