Explorer keeps crashing

I am going to work through "Captain Jacks'" guide to explorer problems but just wonder if anyone can spot the cause of mine from the reports posted at the end

I have an annoying problem with Windows Explorer (not IE) which keeps crashing for no apparent reason. It usually restarts OK but is nonetheless very annying and when it happens it then seems more likely to re-occur more frequently in the same session. It happened on two previous installations but the first time I ended up with a Fresh windows install but it takes me days to get the computer back to my normal working arrangment. I have improved this by moving C:\ onto a 128GB SSD but unfortunately I lost the last back up that I had prior to the problem developing, so restoring from back up not likely to help as the fault will likely still be in the back up. The other previous time it happened was a couple of years ago and then I replaced two hard drives, SATA cables and the Motherboard (most people pointed to a fault with HD's or the SATA controller) Each time it was fixed it worked OK for months before happening again!

What I have tried so far:-
1) checking hard drives by taking each one out, one at a time with no difference
2) I couldnt test the SSD that way but it is new and was not in the computer the previous time this happened - so unlikely culprit I think
3) I have changed default file display to not show image based icons - this has improved it a little but not eliminated it and, as I have a huge number of photos and videos with numeric file names it is a less than ideal work around.
4) It happens more often when there a few windows open or where I am 2-3 levels into the folder structure but this may be perceptional because it sometimes happens the first time I open Windows Explorer

SYSTEM DETAILS
I have an AMD dual core processor
4GB Ram
2 x 2TB hard drives, 1 x 128GB SSD, 1x 250GB Hard drive (System Back up) and a 3TB go flex usb drive usually connected. I have tried with out this. Also my perception is that it doesnt happen when these are in use (though usually I would be using an internal drive at the same time)

Any suggestions for fixing would be really appreciated

Start by replacing Avast with Microsoft Security Essentials, if that doesn't help open a command prompt as administrator and run the following command:

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\Explorer.exe" /v "Dump Folder" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d ^%LOCALAPPDATA^%\CrashDumps

The next time explorer crashes upload the files in %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps here.

will try second suggestion

Thanks for that suggestion but the first time this happened I was not using Avast which I like becasue of its auto and manual sandbox feature. I am forced to use MSE at work and find that most crashes there trace back to MSE. I am curious as to why you suggest this could be an issue? But will try setting crash dumps and post there. However may take a while as it happens less frequently now that I have disables thumbnail images (though this is really annoying because of all the images I have)

I tried entering it exactly as above 99% I got it right though difficult as cant cut and paste into cmd window! It kept failing on syntax /v even though this is legit command. Was thinking to edit through regedit and got as far as
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\Explorer.exe (added a folder for Explorer.exe) but wasnt sure if the syntax would be same entering it this way - can anyone confirm the correct entry using reg edit? thanks
