So here's what happens:

* R-click on a folder in explorer --> Properties
* Go to "customize" tab
* Choose "Optimize this folder for" X
* Check the "Also apply this template to all subfolders"
* Apply and OK

This works for a little while, and the folder and subfolders behave like the type I have selected. But after a while, after some normal tasks (closing, re-opening, etc), I come back to this folder, and it totally defaults back to the "General Items" type, as did all its subfolders.

The weird thing is, for some folders the system does seem to remember, but not for others. I haven't thoroughly diagnosed the problem to accurately determine when it forgets and when it remembers properly, but this is a big annoyance.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think I managed to find the answer to my own question - Windows 7 by default has this feature enabled: "Automatic Folder Type Discovery"

This is probably what's causing my folders to forget the type that I set for it.

I've turned this off now with the help of this tutorial:
How to Set a Default Folder Template for All Folders in Windows 7

And things look fine now... so far.
