Hi All

I have a newish PC with an crucial ssd on C: and a WDC Black on D: but for some reason when I open some directories in explorer on D: it takes ages to display the contents, upto 30secs in some cases. And thats for a directory with only 150 items.
I can see the green bar in the address bar filling up whilst I`m waiting for it to display, is it some kind of indexing problem?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi PR,

Yes, it could be indexing, but it could also be fragmentation - have you defragmented the disk recently?

What sort of files do you keep on the WDC - anything excessively large?

See if this tutorial is of any help to you:

Are some of the files encrypted? I noticed on my laptop, an encrypted directory would take a while to load for some reason. To fix, I just disabled and then enabled encryption again.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the encryption (of a directory) as in Right-click > Properties > General tab > Advanced > Encrypt contents to secure data.

Thanks Golden will try rebuilding the index. For some reason my index use to only have start menu items but now it seems to be adding folders by itself. There were about 20 folders being indexed, perhaps because they were being shared on the network?

CreepinJesus: None of the directories are Encrypyted. Thanks

You might also want to run a disk check on your D drive in case you have some bad/failing sectors. Missing files and slow loading times of files can be a precursor to a failing disk. I'm not saying it is, but it's worth a check.

I`ve tried all the above ie rebuild index, disk check and encrypted files but still no joy. Any other ideas?

Hm... can you give us some more background on the files in particular that are within the folder(s) that are taking exceptionally long to load? Is it on all folders or just particular ones?

In the meantime, run "sfc /scannow" from an elevated command prompt to rule out any corrupt system files causing this.

I think i may have figured it out. It seems that I had about 4 directories including a top directory being shared to my homegroup. I removed the sharing and it seems alot quicker. For example 1 directory that had 1 txt file in it took 1 min to appear. I then removed the sharing and rebooted and the directory files would appear instantly.
Not sure why that would cause such a slowdown?

Hm, not sure why that would matter, but glad it's not doing it anymore.
