Extend W7 HP, 32 bit License Transfer

I have W7, HPrem, 32 bit, SP1 OS installed on an Intel D975XBX2 MoBo. The MoBo is beginning to fail. Intel no longer maintains or updates D975XBX2. I have ordered a new Intel MoBo D67BG. I want to reinstall my existing W7 OS on the new MoBo. I have the key for the OS presently instlled on the failing D975XBX2.

Will Microsoft allow me to install my existing OS on the new MoBo or will Microsoft require me to buy a new license?

If Microsoft will allow me to transfer my existing OS to the new MoBo, what department (telephone number?) will I need to reach the right person/department?

If you don't change the HDD which has windows on it, you will only have to reactivate windows (1 minute process) however the type of your license might be a problem. The following can happen:

A: You have OEM license (white box). This is a cheaper type of license which can not be transfered from one system to another, and this is determined by the motherboard. So then you will have to purchase windows again.

B: You have a Retail windows 7 (fancy box). Then you have the ability to change the motherboard or any other components, or reinstall windows as many times you wish.

This is dependent upon which version you bought. Factory OEM license cannot survive a mobo change except same model, unless Tech Support helps you do this.

All Win7 retail versions except OEM can migrate to whatever hardware you want, as long as Upgrade version has a qualifying XP/Vista for that machine or is retail and not being used.

However retail OEM is locked to the first mobo installed upon and cannot migrate further than that mobo. We get some reports that MS phone activation will make exceptions for good cause (mistaken install, mobo dies soon after install, etc) but you shouldn't depend upon this.

I have the retail version of W7, HPrem, SP1, 32 bit. Bought at Fry's. Came with three licenses which I've used.

I plan to install a RAID 1 array, Intel RST, on the new mother board and restore from a system image saved on an external hard drive.

My purchased installation disk doesn't have SP1 installed. I successuflly downloaded a W7, HPrem, with SP1 installed, 32 bit, and burned it onto a DVD which I used successfully to attempt a system repair. When the installation file which I downloaded and burned onto a DVD called for my product key, I entered the product key that came with the retail installation disk and encountered no problem. That was all done on the existing D975XBX2 MoBo. I plan to use the same downloaded installation DVD to install the OS on the new D67BG MoBo.

You have retail Family 3 pack Home Premium Upgrade which can migrate wherever you want as long as only three licenses are being used at a time as long as a qualifying Vista or XP are available and not used.
