Hello this is my first post :) i been using W7 from december 2008 im very happy with it my current W7 is RC 7100 x64 with catalyst 9.7 everything is great except one thing...

In XP i could set any resolution i wanted even not supported one and W7 has some kinda blockade that i cant pass...i try Power Strip dident work...

I read about EDID but im kinda scared to touch this stuff...

So i give some details my monitor is Hyundai N220WA max native resolution 1680x1050 @60Hz and Radeon 3870

I want too set resolution 1920x1080 not much difreance right still i cant in catalyst control i can pick it but windows dont let it change...

Where can i change this in windows so i will be able to have 1920x1080? its only bigger by fev pixels so should be no problem right?

Thanks for help in advance...also im newb in this thing so if some one would be kinda to take my hand and teach me step by step i dont wana burn my monitor after all :)

Install the latest Catalyst Software. There was a bug fixed in 9.4 that should do the trick.

Resolved Issues for the Windows 7 Operating System

This section provides information on resolved issues in this release of the ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite for Windows 7.
These include:
• City of Villains: Display now redraws correctly after changing graphics settings
• Catalyst Control Center: 1080i@30hz and 1080i@25hz Component Video modes
can now be applied via Component Video - Advanced aspect
Custom formats modes can now be applied properly and will be available under "List All Modes"
• Display profiles will now be restored when displays are swapped while the system
sleeps
• WinDVD9 HD playback doesn't cause the desktop to jitter or flicker anymore
• Device Manager no longer displays error during express driver uninstall

I misread, for some reason I read you were on 9.2, not 9.7

When you create your custom resolution in ATI did you set it using W7 Screen Resolution? You should find it under Advanced - List All Modes

This info is from Moninfo im no expert but it looks like i should set 1920x1080 60Mhz no problem...

And one detail my current 1680x1050 runs at 59Hz not sure if it matters...

I misread, for some reason I read you were on 9.2, not 9.7

When you create your custom resolution in ATI did you set it using W7 Screen Resolution? You should find it under Advanced - List All Modes

I try that already when i select 1920x1080 it changes to 1024x768... :( i got option to select this resolution but for some reason it dont want to...

I saw that before only after my initial post. I corrected but you were already in the process of responding. I read your post as saying 9.2 for some reason (I had a long night).

When you add your custom resolution in Catalyst does it show in W7 under "List All Modes"?

Just curious, have you tried an older version to see if it is fixed? It is not unheard of for later drivers to reintroduce bugs.

Hi Alex,

What is the maximum native resolution of your monitor, according to the monitor manual? What resolution were you able to set in XP?

You cannot set a higher resolution on an LCD/TFT display than its native resolution, and attempting to do so can damage it.

Hey according to manual max native resolution is 1680x1050.

In in XP i had many more choices for example 1600x1200 worked in XP like a charm and in W7 i dont even see option to select it...

When i try to set higher res than native well windows dont let me id dont do anything or set its too 1024x768...uhh XP was much easier i could even install wrong gfx drivers and it worked :)

And yes i know it can damage my monitor still i want higher res only in windows i need more space i cant afford secound display atm...

And i think theres no risk 1920x1080 is basicly same like 1680x1080 right? also i was thinking safer would be to set it at 60Hz or 50Hz?

Well this is funny everything is great picture is sharp like in 1680x1050 but... i miss fev pixels on bottom where are options to set horizontal and vertical thingies in ATI catalsyst i cant find it...and my monitor has only option to set horizontal...no vertical no joke...HELP :)

Also i noticed its still 1680x1050 but stretched to 1920x1080 so i think theres no risk to monitor life...it works difreant than crt :) so i guess i can use 60Hz refresh rate its still 1680x1050 but stretched to 1920x1080 right?

I only want answears to these 2 things and i will be happy :)

Hi Alex,

Let's think of another analogy. Take a bottle or a jug. Let the empty volume inside represent the native (maximum) resolution of your monitor. Now fill it with water - this is equivalent to you feeding your monitor so that it displays its native resolution. Note how you can have a lower resolution (less water in the analogy). What happens when you try to pour more water into the bottle/jug? That's right, it overflows.

Let's look at your dilemna from another angle. You want more information on the screen, correct? How about reducing the size of items that are already displayed i.e. desktop icons and the size of your taskbar? Both of these can be reduced.

Hi Dwarf

OK i will put it simple when i set 1920x1080 i see more but its still 1680x1050(so nor risk for monitor life) and i only want it in windows just a little more space and im happy...

But i got problem my monitor cant set Vertical thingie i miss fev pixels on bottom of the screen...im traying power strip but its no use...horizontal is fine...so any idea how can i set it? i remeber there were some options but not sure if it was in ATI or Nvidia :)

OK topic to close i gived up on 1920x1080 insted 1920x1050 and 50Hz works fine this is only for windows in games i use 75Hz :)

One last questions in my default 1680x1050 60hz i had 146,000 ramdac use...in 1920x1050 50hz i have 137,000...from what i know too much and it can damage my monitor right? so i should not pass 146,000 right?

And last question 50hz in windows is fine i dont see any flickering...but when i set it to 60hz my monitor will burn faster?

Edit:Hm i just reminded something...in XP i had using 1600x1200 so vertical was larger than 1080 so why windows 7 has problem with it...horizontal can go even more but i dont wana over do it...

Thats all i want to know thanks :)
