I accidentally (a stupid thing) denied permissions to everybody on the external drive (dumb) and now I can not access the dr. I can not access the properties security tap. I downloaded a file "take ownership file", but doesn't work. It's my backup drive. can any body help? Also I tried to access on another computer, didn't work.

If you have data on this drive, boot a Puppy Linux usb stick or DVD and copy off all your data onto another media. I think Puppy Linux may include a function to NTFS format this drive; if not, you can usb or dvd boot any one of several partition management utilities to force out old partition and to bring in a new partition. I use Acronis Disk Director, however, there are several great choices. MiniTool Partition manager within MiniTool Power Data Recovery, free or fee, is another such utility.

Ths for responding RolandsJS. Right after I posted I when back into the ext dr properties and into the Advanced and clicked into the owners tap and I was able to change ownership of the ext dr. Then I was able to access the ext dr's properties and change the permissions. I don't no why I didn't try that before I posted. o well thx again RolandJS

Dave, I thought your info was such a good reminder, I saved it as a text file:
ext dr properties
Advanced
owners tab
change ownership
Then
ext dr's properties
change permissions

Thanks for posting your solution!
