External Drive

So I recently bought a new motherboard a Asus M4A&8-VM and a Phenom II quad 940 processor and set it all up first time replacing motherboard and cpu, but it was easier than expected, things are looking ok but my external drive is beginning to bug me, it works fine but when I restart Windows it shows a red light and can't access it, have to turn the switch off and on at the back, this didn't happen with my old setup

Could it be a setting in the Bios somewhere?

How is the external drive connected? USB....eSATA?

You may need better drivers. I had to do this on my board for eSATA.

almost sounds like a power setting in the bios that might be cutting the drive off? question: When the drive light shows up as "red" is the drive recognized by the system at that point? ex: safely remove hardware icon or anything?

Well you see when Windows restarts at POST the red light goes on, Windows loads up and says it's trying to install device but fails. So it does not recognize the device however if I turn it off wait a few moments and turn it back on, it finds it and I can use it.

try updating the "sm bus controller" driver. I've had issues imaged machines that were due to that sm bus controller driver. You may also want to try an alternate usb port... sounds stupid but I've seen it happen.

check to also make sure USB isn't set to a bootable device. It could be recognizing the drive, checking it for mbr then disabling after it doesn't find it? USB filter driver (beta) is available... Is this installed currently?

Hmm seems like it's working now, all I did was used another USB socket and shut the actual computer down instead of restarting, it's working fine now. Thanks guys for all the help.
