One external drive (2.5") worked well with Win7. After it plugged into a Win10 desktop, Win10 made automatic repair/check (actually Win10 reported no error after checking). However, when plugging back to Win7 desktop, Win7 reported its malfunction and identify it as unknown device.

The following steps were tried in Win7 but no progress:

  • Plug it to the usb port int the back
  • In Device manager, "show hidden device" or "scan for hardware changes"
  • Right click "Universal Serial Bus controllers"/"USB Root Hub", update the driver, no progress; uncheck "allow the computer to .... to save power", no progress; uninstall "USB Root Hub" and reboot, no progress.
  • uninstall "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and reboot, no progress.
  • Right click on "unknown device" to update the driver, get the message "the best driver... already installed".
  • Right click on "unknown device" to uninstall it and reboot the computer to reinstall it, no progress.

The current situation is that Win7 can not recognize the drive while Win10 can access the files.

Please advise how to make the drive accessible to win7 again? I guess it should be done in Win10 because Win7 can not find it under disk management or device manager.

It wasn't broke, and Microsoft fixed it.
