OMG two threads - even Im confused. Which thread is active? this one, or the other

Yes, I did say the letters RAW were there but I didn't realise that was of any significance. What is missing though is NTFS and I was wondering whether was of any importance to helpo finding the drive J. If I try to put anything in there it says it is no longer located on my machine?

According to your most recent screen shot, the J drive appears to be NTFS, healthy, active, and primary.

I'm unclear on the remaining issues.

Is the problem that the J drive is not usable? That you cannot put data on it by copying from another drive?

I agree. Ron : drive J seems to be healthy and can be see by your system, and is formatted to NTFS.

What trouble are you having with this drive?

External Hardd

External Hitachi, one which i used with Windows XP 32 bit.

OK, and its connected to a USB port when you try to access it?

Oh yes, all the time and the red led is constantly shining at the front of it too. I have a mind to take it to the computer centre this morning and get them to have a look at it. They have a whole host of analysing equipment. It would save a lot of hassle and if they can sort it, it would free up your time for other forum users who perhaps are not so lucky to have a center like ours.

Mmmm. Odd - if you try and copy a file to it, can you post a picture of the error message you are getting?

Just got back from the computer shop where the guys had a good look at the external (Hitatchi) Hard Drive. They said although it shows up on the computer as being alive and kicking, it's not. Some kind of electrical problem which has casused it to fail mechanically. At first I thought they were "At it" but when they showed it to me on the work bench I was convinced.

I will get another one and have formatted before I leave the shop!

Did they take the HD out of the case?

Oh yes, I wasn't going to fall for that one. The had it hooked up to one of their machines and askeld me to show them what I was trying to do, which I did. As soon as I tried to park the file, up came the same old message, this drive is no longer located on this computer. Druing the exercise, the drive was as dead as a do do. They said they had never experienced anything like this before and asked if they could keep the disk cor demo purposes. I said sorry, bought it home and wrecked it with a ten pound hammer. It's now in the recycle bin.
