Hello, today I bought a new laptop which has windows 7. When I try to connect my external HD it makes a noise then will not recognize it. It is an WD Caviar 500gb sata enclosed in an ultra case. Please help me figure out why it will not recognize!

Welcome to SF!

Try the drive in another machine. If it doesn't work, we can determine that either the drive or enclosure is the problem.

open up computer management and format it. then it will be recognized, otherwise its just a raw disk in disk management.

OS
Ubuntu
its administrator tools-->computer management-->Disk management
scroll through the list of drives while it is connected, and find the raw disk. it's label will be black vs. blue or other colors.
