external hdd help

my pc rebooted the other night and a screen came up saying windows couldnt start and asked if i wanted to run the repair service. i clicked yes but after about 20 mins it failed and shut down.
i disconnected my external hdd and it booted with no errors
whats the way forward now for checking my external hdd?
i have a lot of things on it i dont want to lose if i can help it
any help appreciated

Start the computer as usual & when it's up & running, plug in the the USB external drive. You should be able to view all the files on it using "Computer".

You should also check your BIOS settings so your C drive is the first boot item in the boot order. It's best not to have external drives plugged in at boot up, as you have discovered. Also external drive should be unplugged only when it says "Safe to remove Hardware", before you shut down the computer.

If that doesn't work, then boot with a Linux Live DVD. Plug the drive in and see if you can see the files that way.
