I have a USB external drive that I use for storage and backup. When I had Windows XP, there was a proper sequence to use before unplugging the cable. Is there a proper sequence for Windows 7? Or, do I just unplug the cable or drive?

Just do a "safely remove" before you unplug. That makes sure that all data is written to the external and that there are no open handles on it.

I don't see a safe to remove icon on my desktop. That's why I posted the question in the first place. I didn't know Windows 7 had one. I can't find it. Is it hidden?

Right click on the drive (in Computer) and look into the context menu.
