External WD 1TB HDD 'Not Initialized' - I/O error not allowing me

I have this WD 1TB external drive that stopped working a while ago. I am trying to initialize it in order to perhaps try to recover data from it using a Data Recovery Wizard.

When connecting the drive via USB, it only sometimes shows up in 'Devices and Printers' as connected through USB (ie, it allows me to click 'Eject My Book' in the task bar). When it shows up there, I can also see it in Disk Management as 'Disk 2, Unknown, 931.51 GB, Not Initialized' with a little red downward facing arrow icon.

When I right click the icon (with the red arrow) and choose Initialize, it hangs a bit and then shows an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

When I run WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics, the drive seems normal other than the fact that a spin up time is 'wrong' (see attached screenshots).



Any idea what I should try next? I would definitely love to be able to recover data from this drive without spending a fortune through data recovery businesses.

Hi spastik0827,

I applaud your efforts in presenting the complete and comprehensive data on your Western Digital My Book external drive.

Unfortunately your external is dying and can meet its end anytime. Stop connecting it and taxing it further that will hasten its end.

Now again it is very unfortunate that no data recovery can be done on this drive by anyone here since My Book employs hardware encryption in the enclosure.

In a case like this where the drive cannot be accessed due to bad sectors, normally we resort to sector to sector cloning of the drive to another drive and perform the data recovery on the cloned drive. We could then hope to get atleast all the good data in good sectors. (Data in bad sectors is already lost)

In this WD My book case we can't do that because what we will get is only the encrypted data.

You have to necessarily contact the WD Recovery partners who only have the necessary decrypt key.

If you are hell-bent on recovering the data you can contact them on telephone and get a quote. Needless to say it is going to cost astronomically.

I'm sorry for your WD My Book device!

It seems it has an internal hardware damage, the spin up time from the SMART values indicates the disks inside can't spin up quickly enough or it takes them too much time, usually it's indicated a 100, hence the overall SMART test has failed. There are obviously bad sectors, as well. The device can't be operational any more. :/

If the data is truly important, then professional help is advised. Jumanji has already posted the link with WD Data Recovery partners. You could also try and RMA the drive if it is still under warranty.
