Extremely slow network file browsing over VPN

Hi,

I'm connected to my work network using a PPTP VPN connection. The browsing of files on the remote server is extremely slow in W7. I have another computer that has Windows XP on it, and there it's fast as always.

I read about the Remote Differential Compression, but disabling that didn't help.

Local network file browsing works fine.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

What type of file structure are you browsing? In other words, a Win2k3/2k8 share or perhaps a different type of file server?

What are you using to browse? Is (slow) Explorer-like behaviour also evident if you say map a drive on the command prompt and attempt to browse the file structure that way? (NET USE * \\serverName\shareName to map, DIR to list)

Are you using the in-built PPTP client or something 3rd-party?

It's a win2k3 server with mixed regular shares and sharepoint shares, but the results are the same for both types.

I also get the same results in Explorer and in Total Commander. Haven't tries the command prompt yet, will give that a go.

Yep, build in windows 7 pptp vpn client connection.

Iam experiencing the same problem. VPN (using OpenVPN) is very slow compared to WinXP. I also disabled Remote Differential Compression but it did not affect the speed in anyway(atleast noticeable). I use VPN mainly when I code using Netbeans and initializing project takes forever. I have mapped network drive of our project server. For example changing directories is very sluggish compared what it used to be with WinXP.

Oh yeah, I also tried disabling IPv6 as I read somewhere that it also could affect the speed but no difference(and it feels silly that I have to disable IPv6 for speedup).

I didnt try the command prompt yet but will do when I get back home.

I hope there is a solution to this as I really like Win 7(just switched to it couple of weeks ago)..

I can say that the link posted above did help the user as far as VPN slowness went.
