Solved Extremely slow network with MS services only

I have a Win7 x64 Ultimate system that I use as a server.

At the moment, RDesktop and File sharing are running EXTREMELY slowly on it.

I have other, non MS services installed and they appear OK.

For example:

I just transferred 800+MB in about 15 seconds using my code source server.

A trip to Speedtest.net gets me 25Mb down/7.5Mb up.

But If I try and copy the same file using an explorer window and file sharing, it takes hours (after several minutes of discovery, I get 16KB/sec transfer).

Every other machine on my network seems OK.

Any ideas?

Hello,

Is this a wireless or wired transfer issue? Wireless files transfers will always be a lot slower than wired.
Have you tried disabling your AV or Security Software installed? It might be trying to scan the files.

Having a gigabit Switch or gig Network Adapter also helps. A good read here on how to improve the data transfer speed in your LAN.

Also, this wouldn't have anything to do with the transfer rate issue from your LAN.

This is not a hardware issue. I get 16KB/sec transfer when pulling off that server with windows filesharing. But I can upload at ~1MB/sec to the internet over the same hardware (NOT windows filesharing). So it's not the Server's NIC.

I transferred > 40MB/sec between the same two machines using Perforce, a code-source utility.

Remote Desktop-ing to that machine is unusable. Other machines on the network have no problem, both wired and wireless.

I have replaced the cables and swapped in a working Gb ethernet switch. No help.

I have only seen this problem with Windows Filesharing and RDesktop.

I did a little research and found out that it's a common issue for RDC, some are suggesting to change the listening Port from 3389 to a diff Port (1025 and 65535). I have not encountered this issue before and I use RDC all day long-daily, therefore I have not tried the procedure. How to Change the Listening Port for Remote Desktop - wikiHow

I'd suggest you backup your registry prior to any editing if you'd like to give this a try. That is...if you have not tried this yet.

Maybe you might want to consider a NAS - a File Server. Some of our network file sharing are thru NAS, no issues at all. Of course, if you want to go this route and an alternative solution.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have to run this server 24/7 for other services, so I really don't need a separate NAS (other than this problem, which is killing me!).

FYI, if anyone out there is still listening, I ran the TCP autotuning fix that people have tried with RDP:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

This DID NOT help. I am still in hell.

Any more ideas?

OK. This is crazy, but I replaced the adapter and now it's working fine. I know that I said it couldn't be the adapter, but it was only affecting RDesktop and Windows File Sharing. Third party servers (FTP and code server) were fine, uploads and downloads from the interwebs were fine.

I don't get it.

Yeah. Well now the new adapter is crapping out whenever I am downloading a torrent for more than a couple minutes (crapped out on a linux download last night, 2x). The connection appears OK, I can ping the local address, but nothing on the network. Disable/Enable doesn't work and I have to reboot. Only with Torrent downloads ~3MB/sec

I think I am going to buy a new MB and just start over. This is killing me already.
