The scam tricks users into allowing a rogue application to access their profile page, which then posts spam messages.

It also attempts to lure people into completing an online survey, for which the scammers are paid money.

Another solid reason that I keep my facebook activities pretty simplistic. I don't play the games, I don't install the apps...so I get what I want out of Facebook without all of the unwanted extras.

Same here. I've found Facebook to be one of the most dangerous places for apps/add-ons. FB is so derelict in its duty to police its own site.

Some people (including myself in some instances) feel Apple is too strict with its app store, but if there is a good eye kept on apps, things like this won't happen often.

But it seems that if you can build an app, FB is happy to have you without evening knowing anything about it.

Interesting read thanks, I'm another that doesn't go there very often and then it's only to keep in touch with a few people. I don't play any of the games or download anything from them.

I always ignored all of the apps right from the start. I keep mine simple. I can see just normal posts, and that's about it. Even with other peoples damn games I made it so I don't see their posts from games/apps.

A few months back, there was also a big one about a "Disney Secret" that everyone seemed to fall for, and it supposedly wanted all this info and stuff before you could see it. Phone numbers and everything. I saw so many people falling for it, I just had to start barking about not falling for every little thing they see on FB. There's even stories/examples about how it works, and the exact steps that the app takes to get the info.
I was so sick of seeing everyone falling for it I just linked the stories, and posted that if they do it.....don't say you weren't warned. Anything that asks for personal info before you are able to see it just isn't trustworthy at all, yet some people just don't think.

+1 Exactly. No apps, no games, and privacy except for friends and no friends of friends.

Yep....and it seems there's only 3 people I ever really talk to on there, and one of them is my boy, since he lives with his mother.
I still never liked the idea of social sites. Myspace was just ....TOOOOO much crap. And twitter......you wouldn't catch me using anything called twitter, or tweeting for that matter. It just doesn't sound good. I wouldn't admit it in public anyway.
FB is about as simple as it gets if you do it right.

I think that even apple is a little lax on their apps, they let a lot of bogus apps out that people have to pay for
