Oh bugger

Had to do a factory image re-install and did a complete back up onto a 32 gig memory stick. So far so good, re-install went ok and personal files such as photos etc all re-appeared but once I got Outlook up and running I could not find the emails or address book.

Now it seems that there were two back ups on the stick but only a few weeks appart so has that compromised the file re-install and where the hell are my emails. I have searched for *.pst (I think that is what they are) but can find nothing at all. I did find an Outlook file called archive and that put some sent emails into the system but thats about it. When I look at the contents of the memory stick it says Home PC with a little CD graphic and when I go to the next layer it says Back up set and then the date followed by a number. The next layer then lists another back up which was the latest with a different number, the next layer gives over 60 folders on the earlier back up and only 6 on the later.

Any ideas as to how I can reslove this lot or have I made a mess of it all

Hi John,

Firstly....You'll have to enable viewing of hidden files and folders in Control Panel >Folder Options > View .

Then you may navigate to C:\Users\Specific User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

Thank you, we are getting somewhere now. I have located all of the outlook psv files but my outlook does not seem to want to import them from the back up, when I browse I come to something called catalogue and nothing else.

Is it ok to copy the files into a new folder and call it outlook and try to import from there???

You may copy and put the .pst file in any location that you desire. You will need to use the import/export procedure on how to restore the .pst in your Outlook. What version of MS Outlook are you using?

This Tutorial from Microsoft will have all the versions.

Hi again, been away for a couple of days so back to trying to sort this out. I have some important emails that somehow I have to retrieve as they relate to a serious injury that my son suffered after an assault, other wise In would simply not bother you with this problem. Can I somehow send a screen shot of what I am seeing? I think that I am doing the right thing in wanting all hidden files to be visible and that I only tick this box when in the file view pane.

That accepted I searched the back up and it came up with a whole load of pst files so far so go. Some of these are now installed but it only goes to the middle of 2012 and only sent emails. Inbox and my specific folders are still missing.

In desperation I copied all of the files that I could see and put them into a folder on my desk top however when I tried to install the largest file it tells me that it is not a personal file or folder..

This is why some screen shots could help you to help me

If there are several .pst files, look for the latest date.

May I ask what type of screen shots you were asking here?

If the visible .pst files are contained in an image backup they are compressed. Try right clicking on the folder they're in to see if there is an Extract to option.
