I am performing an image recovery. I have 4 DVDs that came with my laptop from geeksquad. They say HP System Backup. Everything runs smoothly in disc 1. When I get to disc 2 nothing happens at all. Any ideas of what I can do? I do have an external hard drive. I was considering trying to copy the System back up discs from a different computer onto the external and then trying to do the system restore.

Each time I have tried to hit the f11 key I get BOOTMGR is missing Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. We go through the process continually. If I do nothing upon start up I always get this message. When I choose system recover with the discs, it says that I cannot do it bc there are no restore points.

I have only used these discs once. Disc two looks brand new. When I put in disc 3 or 4 into the disc drive, the disc drive ejects after a couple of minutes. When I put disc 2 in, nothing on the screen changes, the light on the disc drive lights up here and there for a while, then after about 10 minutes the light does not turn on anymore and I just here my fan, and I think, my hard drive running.

1) Clean the DVD Drive.
2) Replace DVD Drive with known good drive.

I am inclined to believe that the dvd drive is not the issue. I have quit the process and restarted it nearly 5 times now. I always get disc 1 to load up after about 40 minutes and then I am prompted to load disk 2.

The physical appearance of a disk does not indicate if the data was burned to the disk correctly. As theog said in his first response, it sounds like a bad burn on Disk 2. So even if disks 1, 3, and 4 did burn correctly you're out of luck recovering your system with those disks.

You could try using the backup disks from a different computer but chances are it won't restore your machine. Backup disks are usually tied to specific computer components like motherboard, graphics card, etc. Otherwise people could pirate one operating system onto a multitude of machines.

I'd go back to geeksquad (if they're nearby) and complain. You could tell them you relied on their backup disks and Disk 2 appears to be bad. You could also explain that people don't have a way to find out if the disks are good until they need to use them. No guarantees they'll do anything but if your machine is under warranty they might help.

As already suggested, you definitely need to get a new set of recovery discs, either from the Geeksquad or HP.

Ok, well it is worth a shot to go to geeksquad and try to get some discs from them. I understand the physical appearance means nothing when it comes to determining if a disc is opperational, although, I was leaning towards relying on the discs functionality due the prior successful usage of the disc 8 months ago. Still, I will try this option out as it seems like an easy step I can take without having to pay for backup discs once more.

I am curious if there is a possibility to copy the backup discs onto my external HDD, from my other pc with Vista, and boot my laptop from the external? This would rule out the question on if my DVD drive is caution some issue in the process.

I was curious to also try placing a new OS on the laptop. Maybe a free Linux OS. I am assuming I must only place an OS that supports a 64 bit system, considering, my laptop is 64 bit.

I also had a thought today. I also had used a program called REvo uninstaller which removes junk registry files. I am wondering if I had deleted some that were needed for my system, would be a possible cause to my issue.
