Failure Configuring windows updates Reverting changes Issue

It's been about two months since i last used my laptop and for some reason i haven't been able to successfully update windows. I have tried SURT but with no success. I have my CBS linked on this post, hopefully that will be enough to diagnose what is going on with my laptop.

CheckSUR is clear - but I can see no evidence that you've run a SFC /SCANNOW.
That said, the major errors in the CBS data relate to Visual C++ v9

Error message when you try to install a Windows update, a hotfix, or a service pack after you perform System Restore in Windows Vista: "0x80071A91" should help - you'll have to use the manual fix, since the fixit will only work for Vista, if memory serves.

Thank you for your response Noel,

I attempted the manual fix you suggested but it didn't work out for me. I have tried using scf /scannow however it tells me that there is a system repair pending and a reboot is required. However, no matter how many times i reboot it still prompts me with the same message. I should have expanded on my boot up experience a little more in my first post but ill explain it here.

When i boot up my computer Windows begins to configure updates. Once that completes, the system restarts itself and once again configures updates. Once that round of updates complete it tells me that the updates failed to configure and once again reboots the system. Only after that point am i able to log back into my computer.

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Because the computer has been unused for so long is the time set correctly.
Incorrect time should give a code but who know, it's a computer.

I can't copy the COMPONENT file because it is being used system and i can't find out what in the system is using it. Any ideas?

In that case, you'll have to create the copy while in Safe Mode, as the system is probably having problems loading and unloading it.

Sorry about the delay - too much work and not enough play
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt...
When command prompt is launched, type in the following command and press enter:

DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Post any output.

Then reboot your computer, booting into Windows normally. Run this FixIt in aggressive mode: You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services


Reboot again, then run SFC and CheckSUR and post the CBS and CheckSUR logs whatever the results.

Please do NOT attempt to install updates yet.


Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

No problem about the delay, I'm just glad someone is willing to help . Anyways, i pasted the commands into the command prompt and got this...

The /Image option that is specified points to a running Windows installation.

Since i got an error i chose not to go any further with FixIt.

Makes sense - i wasn't sure whether that command would run in Normal Mode or not.
You'll have to boot to the Repair Environment to get it to work...


reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.


Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type

Ahh i missed the repair environment part. After giving it a few tries i keep getting Error 2.

Error Code 2 is usually a 'file not found' error...
What happens if you run the following commands from the stated repair environment...

DIR E:\Windows
