Problem: Failure when attempting to copy boot files

Morning All
I keep getting Failure when attempting to copy boot files when running the following command after imaging a new laptop:

D:\Windows\System32\bcdboot d:\Windows

How do i get this sorted out i have created a custom windows 7 image which will be deployed on all new laptops, but i need this to work :( oh and the reason its D:\Windows is that for some reason imagex allocates the sysyem partition on the hard drive as C: and the Windows partition as D:

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can use Hiren's Boot CD 10.1 (HBCD)
HBCD contains tools that can accomplish your task.

Download Hiren's Boot CD 10.1 and burn it into CD

1st, make a full installation of Windows 7 on PC1 (including software).

2nd, Boot HBCD on PC1. Plug in USB Flash Drive.
>> Load into Mini Windows XP (choose from menu)
>> Use MBRWizard to backup(copy) MBR into image file to USB Flash Drive
>> Use Ghost32 to backup partition(s) into USB Flash Drive.
Use High compression will do good. Make sure USB Flash Drive is enough space.

3rd, Boot HBCD on PC2. Insert USB Flash Drive
>> Load into Mini Windows XP
>> Use Easeus Partition Master to create partition(s) similar to PC1
>> Use MBRWizard to restore MBR from USB Flash Drive.
>> Use Ghost32 to restore GHO partition image from USB Flash Drive into PC2's harddisk.

4th, Reboot when done. Your computer will boot into Windows 7 just fine.

You might use 2~4 hours to make a complete installation on PC1.
But, you'll just use 15 minutes to make PC2 able to boot into Windows 7 with all drivers and softwares complete install.

MBRWizard, Ghost32 and Easeus Partition Master are included in HBCD.
One CD, performs all the task.

Out of interest does anyone else have this issue?

In some of the cases, the system will create a 100MB System Reserve partition with no drive letter assigned, followed by your desire partition size of partition (which is the second partition) and the system will assign Drive C for the second partition.

Did you backup the 1st 100MB System Reserve partition?
Did you create and restore the 100MB System Reserve partition?

Did you take the right sequence in restoring the system?
which...

1st > Create at least 2 partition
2nd > restore MBR
3rd > restore 100MB system reserve into 1st partition
4th > restore 2nd partition (Windows system), which the Drive letter has to be Drive C

ok im using Imagex not sure if this is any different to the named saoftware but this is what i do
1) Build a standard laptop as the master image.
2) Create an image using imagex by following microsoft's instructions X:\imagex.exe /capture C: G:\Win7X301.wim "Lenovo X301 Win7 Image" /compress fast /verify
3) Once the image is complete i try to dump the image onto a 2nd laptop (different machine) and i get the error stated in the title once i try and copy the boot configuration

Funny thing is every 1 in 20 or so works ok, its too random, im sure i have missed something somewhere.

i didnt image the system partition no i didnt think i needed to.

These are the full step i used before dumping the image onto a new disk:
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
clean
create partition primary size=300
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs label"System" quick
assign letter=s
active
create partition primary
select partition 2
format fs=ntfs label="Windows" quick
assign letter=c
exit

1 question before i shutdown the machine to create the image should i have run sysprep? Would this make a difference?

The 100MB System Reserved Partition contains very important informations to boot into Windows 7. It is necessary to copy that partition too.

The 1st Master PC build the MBR which will process the 100MB System Reserved partition. Then, only the system will access Drive C.

Although I'm not sure what informations are store in 100MB system reserved partition, but, the PC won't boot into Windows 7 without the existence of the files contain in 100MB System Reserved Partition.

Unless, there is no 100MB System Reserved Partition built during your 1st Windows 7 installation on the so called Master PC1, then, you won't need to copy the 100MB System Reserved Partition.

To avoid installation of 100mb System Reserved partition, pre-partition your HD before Win7 install.

To remove or reimage without 100mb partition, mark Win7 partition active, boot Win7 DVD Repair console to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots, to write the MBR to Win7.

I got the same error message but I figured it out:
I wasnt logged in as administrator.
So I then ran command prompt from the start menu by right clicking it and choosing 'run as administrator'.
After that it worked (BCDBOOT c:\windows /s c:).

Hello beachklas, welcome to Seven Forums!

Anything you want can be deleted without any special workarounds when you boot a Windows 7 DVD or a created system repair CD to diskpart, just be advised, there's no safe-guards using this method, the wrong things can be deleted very easily.

I've had the same issue with using imageX to make a 64 bit version of Windows 7 Enterprise bootable on an Asus 120 Slate

Same problem - same error message.

The only workaround I've found (so far) was copying the System 32 folder from an x86 (32bit) install to the drive of the target 64 bit install and running BCDBOOT from there. When copying - Not overwritting the 64 bits System32 but saving the copied / transferred 32-bit System 32 in a seperate folder on the 64 bits c:\ drive. (eg - 'x86_system32).

Navigated to the copied 32 bit system 32 folder and used the BCDBOOT command to make the new 64 bit system bootable.

So far has worked no problem.

Has anyone used any other method or found further clues around this bcdboot 64 bit OS problem.

Would be good to hear about.
