Such a great game Fallout 3. Best game I've played in a while. I thought Farcry 2 was, but then I got this and loving it :D

It works!!!!! :D:D

I set compatibility mode to Windows Vista RTM, and "run as administrator" on the launcher and it works like a dream. Thank god, I wanted to play so bad and didn't want to log into XP just for Fallout.

This game is sooo good :p

Well, yeah sorry I didn't follow up with the post. I got a little tied up. Anyways yeah it works fine here 32bit Win7 didn't have to do compatibility mode either or Adminstrator mode. (this is usually done when the game needs to update or if the game needs to write to the program files directory for whatever reason.)

I will throw up some game play when I get a chance so stay posted!!

Heh - since I have moved my special folders to the other HD like I do with Vista, I suppose I can install Fallout 3 in W7 64bit and see how it runs - and maybe even pick up where I left off in the bargain....

Yeah my fault, the first time I ran it I was greeted by a black screen, so I thought those options fixed it. Turned them off, and still works on my 64bit version now too.

This game looks amazing :D

And here I am still plugging away at Far Cry 2 in Vista. lol. In DX9 mode too :( (can't use DX10, great framerate, horrible stutter) and with my sound card issue, I can't play it under 7.

Fallout 3 is next on the list. At least in Vista anyway ;)

Falling in and out of love with you: Ars reviews Fallout 3

Relax, it's finally here: you can play it

Fallout 3
Developer: Bethesda Softworks
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Platform: Xbox 360 (reviewed) PlayStation 3, PC
Price: $59.99 (Shop.Ars)
Rating: Mature

Just a few feet in front of me stands a balding, wiry man who wants to kill me. He snaps at me with a loathsome tone for asking a line of ethical questions about his occupation of slave trader. Sun-weathered skin cracks around his mouth as he barks "get yer ass out of here if you don't like it then!" I relent and cool him down a bit. I inform him that I would like to inspect and possibly acquire several of his goods, but I am swiftly denied.
Perhaps he knows of my true intent, to rescue two children who have recently vanished from a neighboring shantytown. He hints to me that I can gain entrance to his slave pen if I offer him the right sum of caps, which are the legal tender in the Wastelands. Better yet, giving him a slave from a nearby town might improve my odds. I question whether I should even continue this harrowing discussion as I eye the road behind me.
I notice a raggedy man in a hockey mask standing behind him, holding a rifle. I quickly pull out my combat shotgun and literally blow the balding slaver's head right off. The grunt in the background raises that shotgun of his, but I put an end to things before he can even pull the trigger. I have found a more favorable solution and fashioned my own means of entry outside of the dialog tree. I'll continue my search for those kids, but first I'll pick these bodies clean of munitions and rations. This was my way of doing things in one of the numerous side-quests in Bethesda's long-awaited and skeptically-approached take on the Fallout franchise, Fallout 3.

I installed Windows 7 Beta 1 last night. Really like it's increased performance over Vista.

But while it appears Fallout 3 is suppose to be compatible with W7 the Fallout 3 Launcher keeps crashing on me. I've tried copying the launcher to my desktop and changing its compatibility to Visa (and XP SP2) and set it to run as Administrator. Nothing seems to work.

I updated my nVidia drivers to the latest W7 beta version. Didn't help.

Any suggestions?

I did as you suggested and went to Microsoft's site and downloaded the Games for Windows LIVE 2.0 Setup. I installed it and tried running Fallout 3 again. Nothin'.

Is this the right file or is there another update I'm not seeing?

Games for Windows - LIVE really has nothing to do with whether a game works or not. That said, my installation of Fallout 3 on Win7 Beta is having trouble too. The launcher will come up, then when I click 'play' it'll think for a bit and then the launcher pops up again. If I try running from the exe directly, the launcher pops up. I can never get the game itself to run, regardless of any compatibility settings I try.

Did you try *both* XP and run as ADmin?

Yes and that didn't resolve the problem.

The first solution was SecuROM was causing the launch problem. I got the patch for that and then the game launcher opened. But when I tried to play the game I would get a black screen and just audio.

I have now got it running, but not with my ideal settings. I have to run it in window mode at a lower resolution. I can only assume it's the nVidia drivers causing the problem. Unfortunately, I can't seem to uninstall the beta video drivers and re-install the latest Vista drivers. Every time I try Windows automatically re-installs the beta.

I don't know why you would expect XP SP2 compatibility mode to be necessary, since it runs fine in Vista. Regardless, XP mode and admin on the launcher and/or on the main executable do not solve my problem. Turning off UAC doesn't help me either. The only clue I have is that the launcher never remembers the settings and goes through the autodetect routine every time it opens.

Did you try installing the drivers over the top of the beta drivers?

I had the same issue with ATI drivers. Uninstalling the 7 supplied drivers first always resulted in them automatically rolling back.

Try using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper from Safe Mode to remove the drivers, then reboot and see if you can ge the WHQL drivers installed.

I suggested that as the first tack, thinking that the Vista compatibility was not worknig for him. I deally, yes, Vista compat is all that is needed.
