Fallout 3 on Windows 7.

I am of the opinion that this is entirely down to permissions or some variation thereof;partly because I'm coming from XP where they are not usually an issue, but mostly because no matter what I do the My games file, and anything in the documents library is READ-ONLY and stays read -only no matter what I do:mad:
This explains the launcher problem pretty much in full ,as it is trying to save to a file that won't let it change anything
SO- either I'm missing something about permissions-thanks,Chuki for the effort there ,even though it didn't work-or I need to get the launcher to save to an unprotected file; not apparently an option for fallout.
Anyone got an idea?could it be a conflict with another program or group, canceling my permissions changes

I don't believe this. You guys have jinxed me. Now I'm getting the launcher loop

The only difference is that I updated to the ATI beta drivers....

EDIT:

Following this thread:

I tried changing the ? to a dash and deleting the FALLOUT.ini and it simply didn't work. I reverted back to CAT 8.12 and viola. No more loop.

FO3 doesn't seem to like ATI beta drivers. Not much help if your using nvidia...

UPDATE! On another forum someone suggested checking the hz the monitor was set at. In the process I discovered W7 had activated my second monitor! (I normally have the smaller one shut off on Windows.) I disabled it and tried the game and it loaded fine in Full Screen! Fallout must have been getting confused with the two monitors set at different resolutions.

It seems like there are a few different issues going on here.

ATI has released an updated Beta driver that doesn't include the endash and replaces it with a hyphen. It's available on Windows Update, and is reported to fix the Launcher Loop. Testing...

Can you post the driver version when your done? I'd like to check if it's the same driver I installed yesterday.

Just confirmed. The Launcher Loop is fixed! The driver name has changed... Previously it was "ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (Engineering Sample -- WDDM v1.1)", where the "--" was an endash character. The new one is "ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (Prerelease - WDDM 1.1)"

The version, as reported by Device Manager, is 8.56.1.4, dated 12/10/2008.

And just to emphasize, no compatibility options were required for this.

(But the installer has to be in Vista compatibility mode to add Fallout 3 to the Games Explorer)

My monitor was set at 60hz. And I agree with you... it sounds like several different issues causing the same/similar problem.

Thanks for that mate. I'll give it a go now.

Whereas my single monitor was set as 59hz at the desktop ;)

If it's not looping, it's permissions...

EDIT:

That new beta driver seems to have improved the framerate. I can play at 1920x1200 maxed (no AA) with the HD texture pack installed. Pretty much solid 60FPS indoors and dips down to 40ish outside. With previous drivers I had to run at a lower res and much lower framerate dips :)

Do you have to uninstall the Old beta drivers? or does this install over them like a hot fix?

I had A LOT of trouble trying to uninstall the 64bit ATI beta driver, the uninstaller failed and then disapeared out of the uninstall programs under control panel, so I had to manually uninstall the ATI drivers...

and windows update isnt doing anything by itself, I guess i'll have to seach for updates or somthing.

Edit: The update from windows update is only 9mb, so I should not have uninstalled the original 73mb ati beta drivers?

The Catalyst install manager is frustrating to say the least.

Try this:

Uninstall the driver from device manger, ticking "Delete the driver software for this device" box.

Once the driver is removed use the ATI cleaning tool to remove Catalyst Conrol Center etc
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/cat-uninstaller.exehttp://searchna.ati.com/promosearch...-x-1=col&sp_f=ISO-8859-1&sp_q=cat+uninstaller

reboot.

Windows will install the standard VGA driver. Go to Windows update again and then select the driver. You gotta jump through hoops, but it works.
