I installed Far Cry but it needs DirectX 9 to play. My PC has DirectX 11 installed which doesn't work with the game. I can't seem install 9 as I get an error message saying a higher version is already installed on the PC. Please help.

Simple

"DXSETUP" That is what you need to run it

PS: it is also the only executable file there

What doesn't do it?

DX11 contains the libraries for DX9/10 as well - so DX11 is backwards compatible.

The redist is just an updated set of DX_ files.

If all else fails, you can try copying the problem DX_ file into FarCry 2's bin folder.

firstly, i'm talking about the 1st far cry, not far cry 2. also it needs dx9, dx11 doesn't render the images properly... and dx9 will not install on w7. i have tried all that you (and many others) have suggested. it just don't work. works beautifully in xp

I overlooked the fact that is was the original Farcry, my apologies.

But I wonder, is this your post?

http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/4022-w7-64bit-original-farcry.html#post466399

If so, what has changed since then? If not, then disregard.

Anyway, In 7, does it give you an error pointing to a particular DX9 file/s?

If so, find and copy those files from your XP installation into Farcry's folder.

Some games will bypass looking in C:\Windows\system32 if the the d3dx9_*.dll is found in the game folder.

And once again DX11 is BACKWARDS compatible.

This means it already has DirectX9 and DirectX10 included as part of DirectX11.

Far Cry is an old game and as such, relies on older versions of particular DX9 files.

I think you are confusing DX11 with the updated DirectX9 files that have been installed on your system which Far Cry relies upon.

That is where the 'higher version' error is coming from. It's not DX11 that is the problem, but the updated DX9 files that are included with DX11 and the redistributables.

Same file name, newer version = Old Far Cry doesn't like it because it doesn't match what the version that the farcry.exe is looking for.

Yeah I wrote that. See, what happened was I installed the game and ran the first few minutes of it (where the character is underground in that sewer, up to the part where he gets the pistol). That all worked fine. Then left it til recently. However just after getting the pistol you leave the sewer and that's when it got all weird. It shows the people and a few trees but no background ie everything is blue. Weird. It seems I spoke too soon and should have played the game a bit further. Sorry for any mix-up.

From what I have been able to find out Far Cry will only render the images properly with dx9. Dx11 will NOT work (why I cannot say) and Windows 7 will not allow dx9 to be installed. The only solution I could find was to dual-boot with XP.

That bit says to me that there is something wrong with your Windows install. Reason for saying that,

dxfiles.png

Notice what the majority of the DX files are? After extracting the redistributable did you try running the setup found in the extracted folder?

lol, no worries.

Apart from copying the appropriate files from XP to the Farcry folder / sub-folders I can't personally say if works or not (I'd install and test it out of curiosity if I could find my disc)

Have you tried running the game in XP SP2 compatibility mode?

Game works just fine here, both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. Then again I'm also not sure how long ago it was that I installed it; been a few years and it has gone through XP, Vista (both 32 and 64 bit) and now 64 bit 7. Far Cry is one of those nice games that once installed doesn't need to be re-installed, as long as it is on a different drive/partition than Window, just update the DirectX files (which doesn't want to work for you for whatever reason) and make a shortcut to the exe on the desktop.

P.S. When you installed the game did it ask to install DirectX? If not it should have.

Yeah there is that little box that should be checked (to install dx9) but then the installer gives an error message and ends the installation process. Hence the only way to install the game is to uncheck the dx9 box.

Two people I know had similar issues with another game, I can't remember the title though.

First time I tried, the game installed and ran (title screen looked normal) but I couldn't see anything in-game... graphics were featureless blue.
I'd forgotten about the patches (doh!). Patched it to 1.4 and everything's fine now, with Win7 64bit.
With my spec, it runs great at 1828x1020 with everything at maximum - looks fantastic and is silky smooth.

Don't be fooled by the 'Junior' thing. I just don't post a lot.
I've been building/configuring/fault-finding PC's since Win3.11 and DOS6.2.2
I learned machine code on an 8086 & BASIC on a Commodore Pet, so I've been there from Early Days!
There's not much about PC's I'm unfamiliar with. I'm just here to find solutions to the problems Win7 presents. Not because I'm dumb or clueless.
