Option A ISO on bootable USB and formatted hard disk.

Option B UNPACKED iso on second hard disk and overwrite older version by running setup.exe?

Option C thru Z methods I haven't heard of yet

(Tried search of tutorials without success - would be good to have tutorial on Fast Install Clean/Upgrade ) :)

Installing from a usb enabled drive is so much quicker than cd. I have only installed 7068 and 7077 from usb but it cut the time to install by about half. I suppose it is because data has faster read write capabilities on usb than cd. It will always be the way I install form now on. It took about 8 mins to install 7077 x64 this morning. Good times:D

yes installing from USB if fast as hell, however all usb keys does nto achive same speeds. I used had 4gb kingston before, i was unpacking whole iso to that USB for like ~30min. However read speeds where decent (~20mb/s). But now i bought new a-data usb key only for win7 instalations and whole iso gets unpacked on it in like 6min and even got increased read speed to like ~30mb/s. So you need to be carfule what are you buying, its worth to read some reviews before you buy usb key.

Yes some of the older usb sticks are terribly slow, i have a few and can not a serious difference with my oldest one, almost not worth using at all.

Like everything else in this world you get what you pay for. You are of course right but I think as long as you buy a ready boost enabled stick then you wont have any problems installing. And of course your computer has got to be able to boot from usb which some are not.

Thanks Swarfega RST101

I would have thought read speed from second hard disk would have been faster and less 'glitch prone' than USB and avoids the burning of dvd too.

Digger - that's the idea! Being able to run from the hard disk saves the hassle of making a dvd - so speed would be equal to or better than usb. We' ll see if someone has tried it.

i have vista home basic on C and and windows 7 X64 on F , how do I do a clean dual boot install of build 7077 with a dvd disc on drive F, without disturbing Vista. I understand all instructions to install excepting Format , which was realy simpler with xp

OS
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Just put the disc in reboot the computer, make sure you have your DVD as your first boot option and once the setup starts and you get to the screen where it says Upgrade or Custom install, select custom install and then select the partition you want to install on and then select formate and when that's done hit next. You should now have a clean install of 7 and Vista should still be fine.

well if your dual booting, it be faster if you have an empty drive for windows 7 and then bootup from your xp/vista and mount the iso with mounting (daemon tools or w.e)softwares and install windows 7 in the empty drive...boom takes bout 30min to 1 hour :D

You should just be able to click custom install then choose drive F. It will place all your old files in a folder called 'Windows.old' on the root F drive. That or you can reformat F then install there.

Edit: Mr. GRiM beat me to it.

With Vista on the same first partition of the same drive if you boot up from a dvd you still see the Vista boot screen while 7 becomes the default OS. For seeing 7 on a second drive the best solution is to simply unplug the Vista host first for the stand alone of 7 and later edit the Vista BCD file even while booted in 7 to add the 7 entry in. That can later be removed.

If you decide to use EasyBCD or the VistaBootPro(ripoff of the first) that will automatically look at the Vista drive as C despite having a clean install of 7 on a separate drive since the tool was written for Vista. Without Vista present however you can add XP or 2000 into the 7 boot loader.

The max time for booting off of a dvd is 20 minutes with the 64bit install going faster then the 32bit on the same system. That was first noticed with the 7000 builds. Both previous versions start off at about 40 minutes plus device drivers running close to an hour while 7 sees that wrapped up in half that time.

Not really sure what the point of this is -- does it matter whether it takes 15 mins or 27.327168723984531..... mins to install -- anything less than 30 mins in my book is totally acceptable.

Actually it's what you DO with the OS AFTER its installed is what really matters.

Fair comment Jimbo45 - the point is that I recently built I7 920 rig and I am 'experimenting' with ALL the bits hw/sw. :)

Things get a bit tedious after builds 7000, 7057; 7068 zzz zzz! There were also a couple of flawed downloads and a couple of flawed dvd discs yawn.

So the slicker the install the better. :)

Thanks to all who have commented. Still on quest for authoritative answer Digger/Smashy closest so far.

( Imo "AFTER" install = minor detail until RC and RTM released. )
