Before I started building my own I had pcs built to my own spec by a couple of British companies, notably DinoPC.
When I priced up the parts I'd chosen at retail prices I found they hadn't charged much for building it and setting it up etc and I got a warranty. Well worth it and there are a number of companies that will do this.
I think it was about £60 for a £900 build so, for the warranty and peace of mind, it's almost not worth building your own.
Mind you I enjoyed building my own and I glow every time I switch it on

If you're just looking for statistics for an assignment, and this poll is what it's based on - well, there aren't any obvious leaders/laggards when it comes to laptop brands, it really mostly boils down to preference. You might as well populate your data with some nice dice rolls In fact I think some of us here would enjoy trying to see if random dice roll results agree with what they think when it comes to picking favourite laptop brands...

You forgot eMachines too, but those are rare nowadays.
I personally prefer DELL computers, they are built to last long, perform quickly and with the customer in mind.

Help us 'help you'. A clearer idea of your topics premise may cut down on useless data.

For your stats - are you concentrating on quality available now or quality from years ago? Or is it simply X amount of people prefer brand A compared to brand B?

Does your overall thesis/Topic have a subjective outcome? ie Quality overall has declined regardless of brand choice, or are you simply after raw 'consumer' data?

For stat fluff sake - I had a pre-built Hewlett Packard which lasted Seven+ years until I intentionally 'terminated it'

The family had a Packard Bell that that was a PITA flawed unit from day one for 5+ years. The 15"inch LCD screen still works though


More recent, My sister has a Compaq Presario Laptop that made it ~2years before requiring repairs.

My father had an ASUS eepc that still works, although the build quality is sub-par.

I build my own and my motherboard of choice at the moment is ASUS so thats what I voted. I've used MSI, Gigabyte, Soyo and a few others over the years and they all seemed to have some kind of glitch or problem of some sort. My current system started as a bare bones from TigerDirect. I've upgraded a little bit and added a few parts and have had no problems what so ever. The ASUS motherboard is nothing fancy, its pretty basic. Maybe thats good a thing, there's less to go wrong.
