Solved Favorites open printer dialog

When I click a link in Favorites a print dialog box opens. It will do this for all favorites old and new. I uninstalled and reinstalled IE9 and IE8 but the problem still persists. I ran the MS Fix It app to reset IE settings but still no help. I wanted to do a complete reinstall of IE but unfortunately I can't find clean install version of 8 or 9. It seems the only way to install is through the online install app at the MS website.
Running Windows 7 64 bit

Any thoughts?

Hello Crabjack, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if downloading and merging the URL option in the tutorial below to see if it may help if this a bad association issue. The download will restore the default associations for URL file extensions that are the links in Favorites.

Sorry it took so long, I merged the .reg script for the .url associations. Unfortunately it didn't correct the issue.

The issue started when I tried to install a stand alone version of IE 7 on my wife's system. She does web development and had to do some testing in IE7 for a client. The stand alone software was from Tredosoft. I searched their support forums and saw that others have had the same issue but there hasn't been any resolution posted. I even sent an email to tredosoft but never got a reply.

You might be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before you tried installing the IE7 to see if that may be able to fix it for you.

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually that was one of the first things I tried. Unfortunately the idiots who administer the network systems at my wife's company have disabled System Restore with a global group policy. Even if they were to switch it on there are no restore points because the group policy didn't even allow them to be generated. I questioned why the system admin would disable such a valuable support tool and was told they didn't want users to be able to undo updates and changes they push out over the network. I think the real reason is because they're control freak morons.

Thanks again for your suggestions. We've been able to work around the problem by using the History folders as a pseudo Favorites folder. It's a pain but it works.
