EDIT: I've figured out what I'm going to use (Damn Small Linux) and I'm installing that.

Okay. After some months without it, I finally managed to fix my laptop... partially. But I need to know a few things on what to do with it, as it is now crippled to only 256 megabytes of RAM (don't ask why)...

I would like to know:

1. How well would Ubuntu 10.04 run on this system? That includes daily usage of Firefox, not just running the OS.

2. If I were to use this as a file sharing server for my home, what would be a good OS to use, and do you know of any guides? I've looked, but didn't find any that helped too well.

Thanks! A lot... hehe

Any Linux distro will do, but stay away from heavy Desktop managers (GNOME/KDE is a HUGE NO NO). As for a Home server, Linux IMHO is the BEST there is today. You'd want to install "Webmin" though, it'll greatly simplify your administration workflow.
