File associations WMP

Hi folks, first post here because I did a search for answer, but to no avail.
Somehow or another when I setup WMP I wanted iTunes and quicktime to handle certain filetypes, and WMP to handle "windows only" file types, Not to mention Pro Tools to handle midi etc. Anyway, I can't seem to change this now, and was wondering if anyone here knows how (short of uninstalling, re-downloading, and re-installing.).

Pretty simple, really. Right click on the file type you want to change association. Choose "Open with." Select the program you want to open with [or Default Program], and tick the box to make it the default program to open files of that specific extension. Done.

Thanks MMD, but just to clarify... Are you talking about doing this for each file that comes my way EVERY TIME, and over time I will have the associations I want? Or are you talking about a LIST of file types that you want WMP to associate itself with, tick on all the boxes, and whalla, all is good with my universe?

If it is the latter, I can't seem to be able to get to that screen once WMP was "setup", as I see no file type association option upon opening WMP now.

If you can somehow show me how to get to that list, well, you know more than I, and this Wolverine will be a very happy camper indeed!

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate your reply, but just don't want to be talking apples-to-grenades here.:sarc:

Thanks whs, your reply posted while I was re-posting. Geez, That's a long list to go through, but nice to know it is there anyway. I'm still at the "time taken to delete program vs time taken to specify all file types vs posting on the seven forum on a Sunday night dilemma"

You misuderstood what I was saying. You don't need to set WMP as the default player for WMP files, as it does that at installation [like you already know]. What I'm saying is go to a specific file you want iTunes to open, then follow my instructions above. Do the same with other file types you want to change the default value. You only need to do it once, and all files of that type will open with whatever program you choose to be the default one.

In other words, to set QuickTime to open .MOV files, go to a file that has the .MOV extension, and right click on it. Choose "Open With" then "Default Program Settings." Choose QuickTime in the list, or browse if it's not listed. Then tick the "Make this default" box, and click okay. Now your files with the .MOV extension will be opened by QuickTime, by default.

Well, now you have 2 methods to solve the problem. For the occasional change, the method that MadMaxData posted is the best option. And as he says, you have to do that only once per filetype.
But there are times when it is better to work with the filetype association table. Example: if, e.g. you install another player like VLC and you do not watch out during the installation, VLC will grab all filetypes it can play. Now you may not want that. Then you go into the association table and change those that you do not want to be associated with VLC. That is easy in this case because VLC will show it's red and white cone .
Anyhow, the filetype association list may be impressive, but 90% of the associations you will probably never touch.
