I don't know about other people, but for me this is a regular cause of irritation.

I'm using an application (Photoshop is just one of many examples) and I want to choose a file (say, to open it). The application brings up a file browser, but instead of My Computer appearing in the dialog box, allowing me to find all the drives and files on my computer, instead it only brings up the Desktop. And since I keep nothing on the Desktop, that means I can't access the file I want.

Is there something strange about my computer or is this a common problem?

Generally the window will default open to desktop or my documents folder or sometimes the last place you navigated to the last time you used it
Why cant you just backup through folders or navigate to your desired folder with links down the side or navigation buttons across the top of explorer window

Post a screen shot please. That would help us understand the problem better I think.

What about from other apps like Notepad or Wordpad or even Internet Explorer? If they work okay then it's the program itself that has the problem.

Also, you don't need to use Imageshack or any other photo sharing site. You can upload pictures here.

Click on the Paperclip Icon next to the Smiley Icon. In the Manage Attachments window, click Browse and navigate to where you saved the image and select it.
Click the Upload button.
Close the Manage Attachments window.
Click on the Paperclip Icon again and select the image you uploaded. It will be placed in your post.

Oh. I just wrote a reply then clicked "Mark Solved" to post it and my message disappeared! A bug?

Anyway, what I said was this problem doesn't affect most applications, only certain ones, most importantly Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. So I'm going to have to ask an Adobe community about it I guess.

Also, thank you for all your help Rich. I didn't realise you could upload files to this site. Thanks :)

When you get it fixed, could you post the answer here or a link to the answer? Might help someone in the future.

Good luck.
