file delete very slow

The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate, the computer is an HP Presario.

When I delete a file in a directory, of any extension, it takes about ten minutes or more to ask if I wish to delete this file.
When I delete a working file from within a program, say Excel 2007, the screen presents a transparent whiteout and the program hangs. Some times Windows ask if I wish to terminate the program or wait for the program to execute. Again, if I wait, it takes about ten minutes.
I have tried unchecking archiving and indexing and looked at permissions but have not found a solution.
Any advice?

1) It could be a third-party software issue, such as anti-virus drivers. Try testing in safe mode. If Safe Mode works fine, you can then check the startup programs and loaded third-party services by running msconfig.

2) How are you deleting the files? via the libraries view or via the windows explorer view? The latter may be faster.

3) What about deleting via the command line?

Can you try emptying your Recycle Bin and then delete something?

No change in response speed.
I did try a shift + delete key. I got an immediate delete.
This can be setup as an option for the Recycle Bin but it would be my luck that I delete a file that I wish I could recover.
The delay would appear to be one of going through the Recycle Bin operation. I'm not familiar with the program flow, or structure, involved in moving a file to the Recycle Bin.

Some time ago I had turned Indexing off. Deletions took longer as I would expect. I have rebuilt the indexing. No improvement in delete response was achieved.

Can you try emptying your Recycle Bin and then delete something?

I just experimented with a file by selecting it and tried a 'Move to Folder......' selecting Recycle Bin at the bottom of the pull down menu.
The file was sent immediately to the Recycle bin.

I restored it to its original folder and tried to delete it. I'm still waiting for it to be deleted. The delete command, in my mind, is the problem.

I think you asked if I was using Windows Explorer view or Library. I am using Explorer.

Computer is clean.

I find that Vista and Windows 7 to be real dogs. Given the problems I've had I am looking to an OS that is simpler, cleaner, and more efficient.

At this point the turle slow delete will remain unsolved.

was there any solution to this problem? i have one of my users experiencing it. i don't think it has anything to do with disk fragmentations because when deleting via the Fiel menu > Delete, it is quick, but using the Delete button from the keyboard is ridiculously slow.

I had this same problem with Windows 7 Pro. Very slow delete operation. The cure for me was to clean the registry with CClean and reboot.
