Hi All - looking through the archives there was a great deal of discussion some time ago over replacement file managers - sorry Windows Explorer simply doesn't do it for me. In my case I've used ExplorerPlus which has been out of development for goodness knows how long but it works (usually) okay with the odd freeze here and there.

Have recently started to trial Directory Opus which looks good. It has dual pane with tree view in each pane. What it lacks though is a 'copy to' and a 'move to' function on the context menu - something that ExplorerPlus has. Was tempted to look at Avanquest PowerDesk but the reviews re stability are not good.

Has anyone come across a good 64bit file manager recently? I've scoured the web and there are many Windows Explorer replacements out there but none seem as good as Opus. If only they had that context menu copy and move facility.

Any input appreciated.

Explorer++, Cubic Explorer and XYPlorer.

Used the early versions of PowerDesk and they were good. Then went for ExplorerPlus but development stopped on that FM light years ago. Remember reading Avanquest stating many moons ago that they were going to develop a 64bit version but nothing materialised. Opus seems good but certainly not cheap. Once though you've got through the configuration maze..... just not sure if I can justify the price in my own head.

I actually use Win Explorer more and more but the one thing that has bugged me about it for years is you have to Click in each pane to get the scroll wheel to work in that pane. I like the Breadcrumb system and since dumping PD, and not finding any FM that I really like, I just kind of Click on the Win Explorer icons.
Opus is expensive and has features I don't need or want along with the Maze of options.

I have never found a need for 3rd party file manager software. However, if you want a replacement, check the following site for some reviews;

Xplorer2 from zabkat is a very good dual pane alternative. They have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. You can try the lite version for free. Paid version has some important extra features. This program is regularly updated and is highly recommended.

For about 80% of my needs I use Windows Explorer but when I need more I use Xplorer2. It has a substantial amount of customization features and options. One feature I like is that you can use it in dual pane mode but you can have multiple panes in Tabs on each pane and switch between them easily.

I had the problem of not being satisfied with file managers, so I decided to build my own solution which takes a fresh approach, Desk & Archive (Desk & Archive - Windows file manager with reinvented desktop). I would be interested to get feedback, as this is first version now.

Funny about PowerDesk - when I switched to Windows 7, I tried all of the newer versions of it and the only version that would work was version 8 and it's working fine. It did not until I installed all of the updates.

Just to be safe, I trialed and then purchased XYplorer (the $30 lifetime version). You will get used to it and a big plus is the license works for all of your computers.

Yes, it is now on all of my computers.
