File recovery

Running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit which was inadvertently installed over a Windows XP Pro program. I need to know if anyone knows of a program that will remove the win 7 applications so that I can recover the XP files and settings. Any suggestions will be appreciated.....Thanks...rocknroller

If the Windows 7 installation formatted the hard drive I'm not sure if any of the usually recommended file recovery software will work. A formatted drive may require the services of a professional file recovery lab and cost big money.

As Lee says if you've formatted over the XP drive then there's no way to recover the files I've ever found.

If there's any chance you might have installed to another partition then post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image - Windows 7 Help Forums as we can help you either confirm this or sort it out further.

Files should always be backed up as HD failure can occur at any time. Use an external or another internal HD, or a modern method to back them up to the cloud for free and even sync to other PC's is here: Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Help Forums

May I ask how you accidentally installed Win7 over XP? Did you choose the wrong partition?
