File sharing between two W7 PCs

Hello,

I've two Win7 PCs, plus an XP and a Mac. On both Win7, I've anonymous files shares setup; same goes for XP and Mac.

The problem is: any permutation of access works (7->XP, 7->Mac, Mac->7, XP->7), EXCEPT for when I try to access Win7 machine from the other Win7 machine. In that case, I am asked for username and password, and even when I provide it, it still doesn't let me to get in.

Is this a known problem? Am I missing an obvious piece somewhere?

BTW, it's 7100 and 7201 builds.

Hi and welcome to sevenforums. are both win 7 machines in the same homegroup and does both machines use the same password. Plus some system specs and networking might hlp

Actually, I am unable to join the two W7s into a single homegroup:

I create a homegroup on 7100 build; 7201 build sees the homegroup and offers to join it, however, it's always stuck after I type in the password. Several solutions I found on the web didn't help (including deleting certain key files).

Yes, both computers use the same username and password.

It's a regular flat LAN (Linksys WRT54GL, DD-WRT); 7100 is a generic PC (Intel DG31 chipset), 7201 is a Dell Inspiron 6400.

I'd like to emphasize that, per my original description, only W7 to W7 doesn't work, all other combinations are fine.

Getting all the Windows machines in the same WorkGroup (not Home Group) will likely help solve the problem. I don't know if Mac supports workgroups or not - sorry.

Workgroup is the same on all machines (not that it matters for the anonymous sharing). Also, I've noted twice that connectivity between W7 and WXP works well - which precludes a workgroup-related explanation.

I'm starting to wonder if different architectures have anything to do with this (x64 on PC, x32 on laptop) - although a far more likely explanation is probably different and non-RTM builds....

Architecture is irrelevant when it comes to sharing files. One thing you did not mention (unless I missed it) Is one w7 machine able to communicate with the other computers, and one cannot (I know both cannot see each other)? If so, compare the settings on both to see if they match under these settings:
You can toggle around with network and sharing center / advanced sharing / Use user/pass to manage shares or allow Homegroup to manage...

Both W7 machines are able to communicate with all other machines on the network except with each other, and all other machines on the network are able to see and access both W7 machines.

Both W7 machines are set at Home network.

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading both W7s to 7600, though I'd rather wait for the official RTM.

No... nothing is different. It is an SMB Share, and Windows, Mac, even Linux can access them....

and machines can be in different workgroups and still access shares with the same local user account...

Also I have 4 different builds in my environment and don't have any issues with shares. I used the C$ all the time... along with shared folders for my home theater....

Lets start from the beginning....


You can show me a screenshot of the share? (please don't say its C:\)

I would like to see the advanced sharing>permissions on each, and what accounts can do what. If you don't want to provide this, check to make sure the account has the same properties on each side.

One thing to check too is the advanced sharing settings in Windows 7

Open HomeGroup from control panel>change advanced settings> make sure Turn on file and printer sharing and under HomeGroup connections select "Use user accounts and passwords..."

I know some of this seems basic, but Windows Sharing works out of the box, after setting your shared folders and allowing exceptions in the firewall.

Getting a prompt for a share and the password not working usually means:
1)the password is incorrect
2) the account is disabled
3) the account does not exist
