File sharing with Vista machines..

Opened up directories, shared on network.. Gave user everyone full control, and set all sub directories to inherit these permission settings.
I can browse through the directories, but I cannot write to them from the Vista machine.. Any thoughts?? Very frutstrating.. Took me a while to figure out the above recipe in Vista. Not sure why they changed it in 7, especially for the worse..

Will also add.. When I try to write to the directories, I get...'you need permission to write to this directory' message.. This was one of my biggest complaints with vista. The constant telling me I do not have permission, when I am the sole owner and user of these computers.. I do not want to always be typing in passwords, so I do not set them on my machines, but I would like to be able to read/write to each computer in my network.

I never did figure out how to ever share the core windows folders, or the program files folder, program data, which means, no remote backing up of files, etc.. They really needed to include some sort of 'ultimate control' option in this release, that lets users do away with these messages once and for all..

I am trying to write to the public folder on the windows 7 machine, and I am getting the permissions error..

Any advice appreciated!! Please tell me there is something simple I am overlooking.. I really want to enjoy this OS..

To avoid making this a very complicated story, I'll refrain from describing the difference between shared permissions and Security permissions

from what I understand you gave "everyone" full permission on the share level.

what you need to do it go to the security tab of the "parent" folder (the main folder containing the subfolders)

1. There you have to add your username to the list of users , and give it full permissions, and click ok.
2. (If you can't add your username, you must first go to the advanced setting of the security tab, then to owner, click on change and choose your username, check the box to distribute the permissions to objects and containers, and click OK)
And then do step 1.

On the other computer that want's to connect to that folder you have to make sure that it uses the username and password of the target computer to log on to it.

No mon.. I gave user everyone full control on the security tab, went to advanced options, clicked edit, and then set it to apply those settings to all sub directories.. In vista, this used to be enough. Not the case apparently in Win 7...

Is working now.. 2 factors seemed to be at play. First squonksc helped me to realize that to share correctly, one must be the owner of the given resource they are looking to share. It also seemed like there was a problem network program on the vista machine called network magic that was playing havoc with the sharing settings.. I wound up re-baselining the vista machine and loading the win7 OS, now all sharing is functioning correctly..

Hope you don't mind a lil hijack here, I seem to have the same problem as you have.

I'm trying to get the network sharing to work here, but it seems an mission impossible.
My situation is as follows;

I have four machines here, two desktops and two laptops. Desktop1 is running 7 x64, Desktop2 is vista x86, laptop1 vista x64 and laptop2 vista x86.

The vista machines can access (most of them anyways) the shared folders on each computer without a problem. Password protected sharing is off.

On desktop1, with 7 on it, i can see the other computers, but I can't access the folders. The other way around, same story. I can see the Desktop1 from all three vista machines, but when I try to open a folder, I get a message that "the location/folder is available, but the user account that you are logged on with was denied access."

On the 7 machine, password protected is off, network discovery is on, file and printer sharing is on, public folder sharing is on.

I tried creating an account on the 7 machine, but it didn't help.

I am really clueless about what to do now.

Anyone, help?
