I just "updated" to windows 7. I took the Hard Drives from the old PC and plugged them into my new build (along with my new 1TB HDD). How do I move my system settings (hopefully desktop, antivirus, and steam account) to my new PC?

If you updated there should be a windows.old folder, but did you format the new drive? if so that is called a clean install.

Now to import settings etc (which I dont recommend) run the easy transfer wizard. It will transfer most but not all. You will still have to re-install the apps, but the prefs may be saved.

We can be of more use if you tell us about your upgrade.

Hi Ken,
Thanks. I built my computer (please see specs). I did a clean install of windows 7. i did format the drive before install. I also used an OEM copy of windows (big mistake). I'd really like to keep my games and such where they are. Maybe I should do a dual install vista on my old drive and windows 7 on my new one.

If i did that I'd like to "load" my settings from my hard drive into my new system. So that's a boot repair right?

If you had Vista installed on on of the old drives you added to your new build it will probably not boot. If it was running on a different motherboard. You should see the drives and be able to copy files like documents, pictures, videos and anything thats considered "stand alone". But your games and apps will need to be reinstalled.

As far as the steam games, it is supposed to work from any computer. It may take a re-download, but try going to the steam site and signing in to see.

Any other software will take a reinstall. You may be able to carry over your personal settings, but the registry has to be redone for the new software for it to run in Win 7.

If you wanted to do a dual boot, that might be a possibility.
