Dear Forum,

I was working on my computer - looking at the answers to my forum posts and I noticed the following high usage from a program on my CPU.

I was wondering if it a regular program. I am not deleting anything from the program files as yet. I just found it quite weird as I have never received a message from my AV before.

I know it may be nothing - but I am now aware of CPU usage

File type assistant is a application that starts when you try to open a file that you don't have a viewer/player for. It can be downloaded purposely or more commonly as a "rider" with other programs. (i.e. you didn't uncheck a box somewhere in a eula agreement with something else you DID want to download.) It can be safely deleted.

The google updater is totally unnecessary ... it is a part of Google Chrome program. Dont let it stay in the startup.

Free up the startup.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus and the touchpad driver SynTPEnh, if it is a laptop.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept then restart.

Thanks - ask and I shall be answered and with more information than I ever could imagine.

I ended up trying to get my monies worth with my AV - since someone said that Norton is not that great and got some advice and a scan. Norton Power Eraser.

I ended up looking up the File Assistant - and also the CPU association with my computer.

I got rid of it - it was what you both said. I have learnt. It says that it does not take up any room, but just advises you what program to open your extension in. Not good for people like me.

Thanks again.

You never have led me astray yet.

Out of interest - here is my system config - does it look alright - or just uncheck what you advised? I am on a lap top set up.

Other than antivirus (as it might be configured to perform a boot time scan) and the touchpad driver (second one in your list), nothing is needed to be there in startup..... remove them all. As those programs are already installed, you can call them anytime from the start menu all programs list.
