Hi maxie,

I've been using it for years and never had any problems with it.
I like to keep informed of any updates available for my systems.
I use these tools:
FileHippo Update Checker
Secunia PSI
Belarc Advisor

I don't think any of them are perfect, but they all do help me keep up to date.

They do have a portable version available on the link I gave above.
That way you could test drive it without installing it.

Having said that, I just downloaded the Portable version and that is still v1.040.
Seems they haven't updated the Portable version yet, but you could still test it and see what you think.

Many thanks for the Information David ... I have a Computer which i only use for testing Software and Programs Updates etc ..

So shall test it out on that ....

Both Avast Free and Glary Utilities do a far better job of checking for programs that need updating than Secunia PSI. PSI has become too slow, clunky, and cantankerous for me anymore and I removed it from my computers. It's a pity because it used to be so good.

What version of PSI were you using ?
I prefer V 2.0, and that's an old version that hasn't been updated in a long time.
PSI is really not a Program Update Checker.
It checks for missing security patches and end of life programs.

I've got the Avast free update checker, and I'm not impressed.
It doesn't list much, and may show an update available for a BETA version, but not tell you it's BETA.

I'll have to check out Glary - I've never used it.

The last version of PSI I used was 3.0.0.6005. One problem I was having with it was false hits on some programs I had never used on a particular machine and some programs I had never used at all. It was also taking several minutes for it to load.

I don't really use AVAST's program checker all that much since Glary Utilities' program checker (Filepuma) does such a good job.

I've never seen that before.
I have PSI 3 on a Win 8.1 system only because PSI 2 is not compatible with 8.x
Next time I'm on that OS I'll have to check it out and pay closer attention.

One thing I found in playing with the new FileHippo version, FH can be configured to check PORTABLE Apps for program updates, i think that's cool
I like that as I'm moving as much as possible from installed to portable.

Filepuma has a program that is probably similar to FileHippo's. Glary Utilities update checker opens up FilePuma's website for the updates. With PSI, one has to go to each program's home page to get the updates.

AH !!!
I don't use these programs to do or get updates ...
I just use them to inform me of where my system is "out of date".
With that info, I just decide if I want to update (and from where) ....

I'll have to play with what you suggest.
If it can reliably/securely reduce my "update maintenance time", that's great.
That's why I'm moving from installed to portable - I see a huge benefit in reduced "maintenance time".

I have been using FileHippo Update Checker for a long time and found it works great and with no annoying pop-ups or adverts.

At least KC Softwares warns the user before even downloading.
I've been using SUMo portable and haven't any problems.
It is a more complicated program (imho) to learn/use, but it lists more than any other Update Checker I've used.

FileHippo put out a new version 1.43 and renamed it to FileHippo App Manager.
Unfortunately there is no new portable version (yet).
