I have a problem that has been plaguing me since the early days of Windows 7. randomly, files on my computer disappear. the files that disappear are usually media files (music, pictures, videos, etc.) and once it's gone it's gone, not in my recycle bin or anything! if I have the same file in multiple places, if one disappears, they all are gone at once and not recoverable! if I have the same file on another computer like my Windows XP computer, I recover it back but it's only a matter of time before another file disappears! can somebody help me get to the bottom of this?

Sorry I can't be of help as normally they're misplaced or accidentally erased....human error. If this continues then back up and do a fresh install of your OS.

As far as I know Win7 will run HD checking programs automatically now... such as scandisk, chkdsk, etc... I'm just guessing, but more than likely they will automatically fix any errors that are found (otherwise would be no point to running the program, is there?).

ETA: so sometimes a side-effect of masking out bad hd portions is the subsequent loss of files that resided in the masked-out areas.

Consider replacing your HD.
