Files Will Not Stay Grouped.

In windows explorer items will not stay grouped nor sorted.


I am right-clicking then selecting 'Group By' or 'Sort By'. The Files are then sorted or grouped BUT if i navigate away from the folder and then return the files are no longer sorted or grouped.


I have tried sfc.exe with out success.

Alphabetization is the default arrangement for files and folders. With the exception of system files, whose names you shouldn't be changing, you could sort them by placing a number in front of each name.

In my own data, I've moved some folders to the bottom for easy access by naming them "ZZZ---" and some to the top by appending a symbol
"++ ----"

It may be the folder properties. If you right click a folder and select the Customize tab you can change it to a certain type of folder.

Hello jake9wi,

Windows Explorer is terrible at remembering "Sort by View" preferences. Explorer tends to only remember settings for the most recent, or most frequently, visited folders. So, if you regularly visit lots of folders, then you'd quickly loose the preferences that youd set in the earlier folders. The same problem exists in Windows 10.

A possible work-around would be to use Saved Searches, which can be achieved in Windows 7:

If you often perform a search for a certain group of files, then this will show you how to save your search so you can open the saved search at anytime to see the most current search results using the same settings as the original search. When you save a search, you don't have to fine-tune the search settings and filters the next time you want to use it.
