Firefox 34 Launches With Yahoo As Its Default Search Engine

Mozilla today rolled out Firefox 34. While most browser updates these days aren’t all that exciting, this one includes a couple of interesting new features. What most users in North America will notice right off the bat, however, is that this is the first version of Firefox with Yahoo as its default search experience.

It’s easy enough to change the default search engine in Firefox, and I would guess that most current users will quickly switch back to Google. The Yahoo Search experience, which the company specifically tweaked for Firefox users, is perfectly all right for most searches. But at the end of the day, it feels like it doesn’t have some of Google’s smarts, especially when it comes to queries that would usually trigger Google’s Knowledge Graph.

I switched to Bing. Google has become too big and too intrusive for me.

Google mail account ... deleted.
Google docs ... deleted, and replaced with OneDrive.
Google maps ... replaced with Bing.

I like the new search feature when you type anything in the search window it opens a drop down window and you can pick the one you want for that search or just use the default.

I agree!; I dont like yahoo nearly as much as google. Almost all of my searches are done with google.

I use duckduckgo.com for most searches and revert to google for the odd chore. Quite happy with FF and don't see it "falling into the abyss" at all. I use it for most of my browsing. I keep Chrome for news-reading etc and have it set to save... nothing.

A while ago I went into the manage search providers link and deleted Yahoo and a few other search engines from FF, it updated to 34 a few days ago and I have no yahoo in sight

I've had my FF search box set to Wikipedia for ages.
When I downloaded the v.34 update, the search box remained set to Wikipedia.
When I looked at the choices for search engines, all that was listed was Amazon, Ebay, Wikipedia and DuckDuckGo.
Yahoo as an option was/is nowhere to be seen.

Any special setting or something?

It could be because FF decided to go with localized search engines. At least that's what I'm reading. US went with Yahoo, EU stayed with Google, Russia has Yandex.
You might have ended up with one of these: List of 34 Mexico search engines

Mozilla has it all screwed up. Users in the US were supposed to get the 34.0.5 update USLocal that has Yahoo as default, but my version is 34.0, there's supposed to be a 34.1 lurking out there somewhere.
From what I can understand Mozy wanted to revamp the search function for FF, wasn't sure how to do it, and ended up rushing the 34 update through. Don't be surprised if a v35 is in the very near future way before their normal release schedule.

Since PM got split from FF, my context menu option for Yahoo search takes me to an error page.

Since I mainly search for images these days I'm forced to use Google.

If you want to revert back to the old search, go to about:config and toggle the following entry to false:

browser.search.showOneOffButtons

Pretty much the same as me. Quit using Google period over 2 years ago. Use Bing and ...... yes... Yahoo as my searchers. Mostly Bing, which is not bad at all btw. The ONLY "Google" I do is their Translate which is just soooooooo easy to use.

lehnerus, You've probably already tried this, but have you tried removing and then reinstalling yahoo in PM?

Cross reference the search options in about:config with what FF has compared to PM, most settings can be seen by typing search in the about:config search bar.

If you migrated PM settings from FF, I did find: Pale Moon forum the last post by TheRealShane may help:

Also you can search the Firefox profile - if it still exists - for XML files. There will be an Amazon one and an Ebay one; copy those to the Pale Moon searchplugins folder in the Pale Moon profile and next time you start Pale Moon you'll see them in the Search engines drop down box.

Delete the yahoo XML file from PM and paste the fresh FF one in.

If this is a problem with PM you might try resetting PM as a last resort.

If this is a problem with the system and the context menu handler try a SFC /scannow.
Location in registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows might be a handy tool in your situation.

I hadn't tried that.

It turns out that there is no Yahoo Australia (Yahoo!7) search anymore.
I couldn't find a US one either.

I had to install Yahoo UK & Ireland search.

I installed a Firefox add-on today that lets me have a different search engine in address bar and search box.

with the standard setup it's the same engine in both, but now I have DuckDuck in the LHS url/address box and Wiki in the RHS box.

lehn, what badcrc came up with might be worth a try. You might not be willing from what I found out.

I looked around for awhile this (my) morning and really didn't find anything relating to forcing either FF or PM to accept Yahoo!7 as a search engine.

One item, You could have a corrupt search.json file. I also looked into about:config modifications these looked promising but I'm not sure how to manipulate them right now:

As you can see I added Yahoo!7 to the hiddenOneOffs pref, but FF didn't react to it.


Its difficult to correlate when I'm here in the States and I don't use PM. I believe this is being limited by the darn %LOCALE% parameter that FF uses.

Context Search

You can set the default search engine by adjusting the config file (about:config).

I hate the combined Address/Search bars that most browsers use.
One reason I hate using IE and Chrome.

I usually use Context Search (~80% of the time).

I must have FF set to Yahoo! UK (in Linux Mint 17.1).
