Hi, not sure if this is in the right place on the forum but I seem to be having a problem with the latest level of Firefox 6.0.2 which I recently was advised to upgrade to where it freezes frequently (not responding) and I don't seem to recall this problem with previous levels, only since this upgrade (FF tell you earlier levels will no longer be supported so you feel obliged to upgrade). Now I may be completely wrong and it has nothing to do with FF but otherwise my PC runs very well - it is a modern machine with Win 7 home premium 64-bit, 3GB memory etc. I regularly do cleanups and have firewall and AV installed and up-to-date.

Any suggestions ?

Corrupted Profile?

Maybe your FF Profile has become corrupted.
I had a problem with FF4 that was caused by something in my FF Profile.

What I did was:

  • Backed up my .sqlite files
  • Made a new FF Profile
  • Copied the backup .sqlite files to the new profile.
That seemed to fix the problem.

Other than the suggestions made above, I would thoroughly recommend you stop doing "Cleanups" assuming you're using things like ccleaner.

Hi, thanks to all who replied - I think the best suggestion is to uninstall and do a fresh install. I will do that for now and report back.

Schroff87 - you would recommend I stop doing cleanups ? I use AVG PC tuneup that gets rid of a tons of clutter and has proved to help keep the PC running smoothly - are you suggesting doing this can have negative effects ?

Thanks again.

I used to use ccleaner and all it did was cause problems especially with games or cause strange errors to show up. Stopped using it more than a year ago and all has been fine .. infact not needed to reinstall windows since then! I'm not sure what kind of clutter you have on your pc that require AVG to be run in order for your PC to run smoothly but the clean up tool in windows does the job just fine. For malware there's always MBAM.

BTW for your FF problems you can just use profile manager instead of a fresh install and if it works, just copy over the .sqlite stuff from your previous profile.

OK, uninstalled existing FF version and deleted all personal info (did backup first !!! ) and reinstalled fresh copy and restored bookmarks etc, so now it should just be a case of seeing if it behaves. New version is same level as previous i.e. 6.0.2

I'll let you know.

Schroff87 - thanks for the info. TBH, I only really do cleanups now and again and not regularly as I may have suggested and I do believe this to be good practice but I am aware this can give side effects so maybe I should limit this to if/ when a problem arises. I just did a fresh install and that seems to be OK for now but I will look at the profile manager comments you have made.

Thanks to all who replied - don't know what I did before joining this forum, the knowledge out there is frightening..... :D
