Every so often e.g. when i am searching on google and I click on a link a random tab opens up noramlly advertising something. It has only started to happen recently and think it maybe a virus??

You can stop that easily. Install the firefox addon called no script. It prevents pop-ups or anything else that requires scripting. Warning it can be annoying until you configure it correctly

Hi mjwilson94,

Although a virus is probably the most probable cause of the actions occurring with your browser, many sites do link to advertising and other random popups.

To make sure that this doesn't interrupt your browsing experience simply block all popup windows by setting your browser settings as follows:

And depending on what you install, might have ended up with some crap like mywebsearch or something similar on which could be the culprit, and not necessarily a virus.
